But where's the turbo???????????

Ok, I know it isn't 4x4 but this car drove in the workshop next door sounding like a jumbo jet on take off, obviously turbo'd. But, where is it? By the way it's got a 429 big block Ford motor for starters.

Silly me, of course that's where it would be. In the boot where it belongs

ahhh... so you work at the chassis joint yeah ????
I have done a bit of work for the bloke that owns the gas place... can't remeber his name for the life of me..

  That has to be the silliest f*****g idea I've seen in a long time!

Turbo lag? What's that?

Those turbos would produce boost sooner if you send them a letter via Australia Post.

It's running a hybrid turbo off a Cummins diesel and has a 5" exhaust out of the turbo dumping straight down to the ground. Here's a pic of the exhaust plumbing coming all the way back on the RHS and the inlet going all the way forward on the LHS. The inlet plumbing is 3" diameter all the way.
I don't know why this guy has done this but it must have as a dare or something as it's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.
Regards Andrew.

Hit the nail on the head. Thats the dumbest setup I've seen yet. And I thought ricers where bad. Sheesh.

there are actually companys that specialise in this type of setup getting quite popular on cars with big engines that dont need the turbo to boost off the line

lots more if you google for rear mounted turbo

I was thinkin this, by the time the turbo kicked in, it would be good timing on the power curve.... probably about the time the 429 ran out of sniff.

yeh it has lag, but its probably got enough torque to fry tyres without the turbo.. then when it hits boost, fark!

But think of all the hassles involved. You have to plumb exhaust into the boot along and then out again and intake from the rear of the car to the front. Response is always going to lag because air has to get past the turbo at low revs so it will act as a restriciton in addition to having to travel the whole car length.

Any mechanic with proper knowledge of turbos could set up a much better system all in the engine bay that comes on at just the same time as this one.

I'm not trying to start an argument but I still fail to see any advantage of this setup that can't be offered in a normal setup. And its a sh*t house ford :finger: :finger: (Go the commies - some wont like this)

Personnally if your low on space under the bonnet a setup similar to this would be better Image

The car has come in next door for quite a bit of work to get it up and running properly, it has a number of oil leaks and the auto needs some work but Shane, who does a lot of the worked over cars next door seems to think it'll produce some pretty good power. I'm yet to be convinced though, like everyone else I think it'll be as laggy as hell, but the torque of the big block will get it up off the line while it's waiting to boost up I suppose.
Shane likes playing with Nitrous Oxide and he said a shot of 50 hp NoS would really make it sit up and take notice.
They've got one of the best 4 wheel drive dyno's you'll ever see next door and they've had some pretty powerful cars on it, It'll be interesting to see what power and especially what torque it puts out.
Regards Andrew.

I've got no doubt that it can produce plenty of power and plenty of torque - on a dyno. It'll probably even do OK down the 1/4 mile, but imagine trying to punt that through some twisty bits? It'd spend more time off-boost than on.

I'll give it marks for novelty, but it doesn't trouble the score-card for everyday practicality.

To each their own - that's not for me.

Stuee, I think you're missing the point, sure you get a far better result doing it as you've posted but I think it's more like he's been told a rear mounted turbo can't work which has made him do it. At least that's the impression I get from Mike and guys next door.
Regards Andrew.

now thats a sneaky setup, sure it's a bit silly phisics wise but the turbo would be cooler, my bigest consern is the extra weight of running the aquaduct need to suport this sort of air and oil flow. i'm agreeing with the others about lag but when this thing has 429 to play with it's probly got all the torque it needs to melt rubber and tow the titanic off boost any way.

any output figures?

No power figures yet, it needs quite a bit of work before it's ready to go on the dyno. When they do a run I'll see if I can get a digi pic of the screen.

When I first saw that I thought they had done it to fool the cops "honestly officer, it doesn't have a turbo, take a look under the bonnet if you want"

Are Turbo'd V8's legal in Vic? Adding forced induction to a V8 in passenger car is illegal in QLD.

naah its legal... under bonnet blowers are legal in qld... over bonnets arnt...

cant see why turbos would be different..

it still needs to be engineered

and with that big a motor and a turbo it would need some serious upgrades to steering braking and handling before it would be passed by qld transport.

The mod plate/mod code for after market forced induction on passenger cars is the same anyway - you can add supercharger or turbocharger under the same mod plate.

Do they have throttle response do they?

the 911 turbo often ran a front mount intercooler for track and hillclimb events, the plumbing of the turbos had to go all the way forward then back, this didnt seem to cause many problems.

about being off boost on a tight circuit, you all might not understand this but there are several drift cars running SR20DET (2 litre 4 cylinder nissan silvia engine) with a trust T88-34D turbos, some consider this turbo big on skyline GTR motors (2.6 straight 6) and they manage to never let the car off boost. if your a good enough driver and have the car set up well enough then you could have that thing on full boost from a take off.

The only problem i see is there not being enough compression of exhaust gasses from the engine if you use a properly flowed exhaust/extractor set up, which i imagine would be twin 3 inch pipes comin off 1 1/8 or 1 3/4 extractors. this system is run on what looks to me like a single 3 inch without extractors which would have sufficient exhaust flow to turn that turbos bearings out.

who cares if it doesnt look right, im not a proffessional or nuthin but from what ive seen or been told that looks like it would generate quite good response and be quite fun to drive.

and thats my 2 cents

thank you and i did not mean to insult anyone by anything that ive sed.

now im no expert on turbo's but i can gather that they get damn hot, and i personally would not want something that gets that hot right next to a fuel tank, ticking time bomb if you ask me

It's been hilarious here today, the car was parked in the car park with both the bonnet and the boot up. All the young guys walk past the open boot and almost fall over themselves trying to stop on the spot. it's a classic case of "WHAT THE PHUCK"
As far as engineering goes, forget it, it's really quite bootie fab with the chassis cut to allow the inlet tubing to get through. Admittedly its been capped and welded where its been notched but its not very nice.
If he ever gets pulled over by the cops, this car will never get back on the road. The turbo is that loud with a 5" exhaust and no muffler it's going to be a cop magnet if he doesn't change it.
Regards Andrew.
