gearbox breather

I've got a 1.3ltr gearbox in my slapped together red thing and it pi$$es out oil on any sort of angle.
It has no factory breather valve, it breathes (from what i can tell) from the gear selector boot.
I've been told that i can drill and tap a breather into the top of the box. Is there any way that this could be done without removing the whole box? ie can you unbolt the selector housing without taking the whole thing out and pulling it down?
Or is there any other ways to to fix it? I keep getting told by others that my car is on fire, so far it's only been the smoke generated by the dripping oil onto my muffler
