83 Hilux gearbox conversion to 5 speed???

I've got an 83 hilux with a petrol 18R motor and 4 speed gearbox. I'm looking to put in a 5 speed box. I've heard that the 5 speed out of a later model petrol hilux will bolt up behind the 18R but apparently you have to modify the gearbox mounts and tailshafts.

Can anyone clarify this conversion? Or is there an easiar or better conversion?

Should bolt up with the 18r bellhousing.
I had a w56 behind the supra in my Surf which I replaced with a 4 speed G52 and had no dramas.

you will need a G52 with a 22R bell housing, this will just bolt up you will need the 18 clutch / flywheel

You will need to remake the cross member mounts and get the rear shaft shortened and the front lengthened

gearbox

If your four speed is an L45 you can get a fifth gear cluster added to modify it to a L52. Australias Best Motor company did mine about 18 months ago and no probs so far. They are in Smithfield somewhere from memory.
