Hi

The rear crossmember (bumper) on my county has some rust, predominantly in the drivers side end.

Contemplating buying a replacement corssmember, getting it galvanised and rewelding it back onto the chassis rails.

Anyone done this before ? How much of the body will I need to loosen up to be able to lift it off the chassis to weld the top joints? Any tips/hints ?

Thanks

Rod

I haven't done it, but all the replacement 110 crossmembers I have seen finish on the low section of the curve in the chassis rails. So there is no need to lift the body at all to get a proper weld.

If you galvanise it make sure you gring all the zinc off around where you will be welding - the fumes from welding galvanised steel are extremely toxic.

If the rust is only in one of the outer sections of the crossmember and not the middle or the rails it might be cheaper and easier to get a sheet metal place to bend up just a new outer section.
