Calbah do a coil conversion in either bolt on or weld on versions, have only heard of one account of the bolt on but this wasn't from first hand source. Apparently works well.

For front and rear I think they are asking around $6000 supplied,
$3500 ish for just front. Not 100% sure how complete the kit is, but check them out and talk to them. There's a guy up here investigating the front conversion for his Middy and says they're pretty good to talk to.

I have 80 series diffs going under my middy for coil conversion, but installation is yet to begin (i can't weld).

saw a troopie done up near maitland not sure if he's on here or not

i think its easier to go gq diffs at the same time if you do it...

can't remember though

tell me are gq & gu diff assemblies better than yota ones? i own a 40 and i'm keen to go coils and a wider diff. what's the go with strength and value for money? i know dana are strong but they are a bit expensive.....

problem with GQ diffs is the pumpkin offset is centred as opposed to the offset on the cruiser. This is why I stayed with cruiser diffs although not as strong as the GQ. GU's are very expensive also

I know that people have done the GQ swap tho, and I would be interested in reading if someone shares their experiences.

From what I've read, GQ diffs have weak CV's (similar to early cruiser and hilux) compared to 80 series but stronger (but also larger) front diff centre if reversing under load is a concern.
80 series would be pick of rears for pumpkin offset and full floating diffs.

My mate did his by grafting on all 80 series components. He reckons if he was to do it again he would use an 80 series chassis and running gear and fab body mounts. That is how I intend to do mine.

i have a mwb i race in the winch challanges. did the 8 day on leafs. now i have coils all round. bundy in front, rangie in rear. used my diffs. took a front and rear chassis cut of boath 4bees, unpicked the mounts and welded them to my chassis. had to use 80 series panard upside down, make my own mounts, used 80 coils. rear trailing arms are 200mm longer than standerd, rangie coils. front a bit tricky to set up, but will be easier next time. rear was a breeze.

Err... prob check your facts... GQ diff is definantly stronger in CV and centre than any cruiser, 40/60/70/80/100 or hilux... GU is once again stronger than GQ, however you lose diff clearance because of 14" crown wheel, c/w 11" in GQ

GQ and 80 series are comprable for strength in rear, and all cruiser diffs from bout 1980+ are full floating... only ff rear housing gq/gu is leaf cab GU.

80 series HP runs smaller 9" hilux centre in front, which makes it weaker, esp in reverse with lockers, bigger tyres, mud.. etc.

As discussed in a thread about SPOA 60, that wuold be considered a major driveline/suspension mod and would not be passed for roadworthy, engineered or not.

With respect, I think you might have to check your facts, dude.

My mate had had it done on his 75.....front doesn't flex much better to the leafs, but the rear travels awesome, and the ride is heaps better!!

And it's all approved in QLD.

Heres some pics....

yeah some facts.

cruisers got FF rear at the latest in 1976

and isn't hilux center an 8inch?

yeah.

and GQ 40/55/60/75/hilux are roughly the same size. different spline count tho. this may make one stronger than the other, but not by much.

80 series dwarf the GQ CVs.

rear 80 series rear CW&P is 9.5 inch same as 40/55/60/75, pretty sure GQs have 9.5 inchs too. except for leaf cabs etc.

personally id go for the 80 series diffs and mounts/arms etc. use std parts as they are cheap and easy to get. (i have 80 series front coils/arms on my 45 using 60 series diffs) im happy with the amount of flex it gets. heres a photo:

Also interested in who did the conversion on the blue 75. And what diffs etc! Maybe it's cheaper to buy a 79 series?

I dont think there is a single bit of truth in all that :?

I know this one well as it was done in my shed about ~5 years ago if i was to do it again id get a front from a 78-79 series as the chassis rails are vurtually identical so all the chassis/suspension mounts will go straight on. If you used the front axle assembly it has compatible width with the rear but uses the same small front high pinion diffcentre as an 80 ( this one has custom front housing with GQ centre and 78 axles), just fit 80 hubs and brakes to get it back to six stud. The gearbox x-member is a big obsticle ( 60-75 5 speed g/box and split transfer) as it is in the same place that the radius arm mounts attach to the chassis and needs some real trick booooooooooooty fabbing to get it all to fit. On the rear axle we used all the diff mounts from a 80 rear axle and fitted the suspension mounts from the 80 chassis to the 75 chassis with some custom reshapping and adding some extra x-members in the chassis to support the coils. This job looks real factory but the body and tray were removed to get good access all fabing was tacked, suspension cycled and checked prior to welding, rolling chassis was stripped so all welding could be done in the best position to ensure maximum strenght, the axle housing could be pre heated prior to welding to ensure high strengh welds and minimum distorsion to the housing by careful and thought out process of final welding of all the mounts. This vehicle is still going strong with out any structual faults to date.

Ok, the facts I know on my mates 75....

It was done by Mongrel Metal on the Sunshine Coast, who did an ok job of it, but it was sent to Rods Enginnering later on to get a lot of stuff strengthend after the wheeling took its toll on some of the mounts.

Its running the std. diffs front and rear, with just custom mounts welded to them. The front uses some std. arms off a GQ Patrol and thats about all I know.

Heres a pic of the front setup.

We did a coil conversion on a mates 75 series with a fabricated 5 link setup on the front. Diffs and rear arms were from a doner 80's which was a stat right off.

The thing is tops in the bush. Flex's really well both front and rear and generally sits quite level in the bush. One downside, we had to fit sway bars to get through engineering. but otherwise went through fairly easy.

Big job though. took around 1.5-2 weeks with 3 guys working on it
