My mechanic has just informed me that I need a new diff centre for my 1983 petrol toyota hilux. Instead of simply replacing it with another single-wheeler, I'd like to put in an LSD. I've heard that some of the hiluxs later than mine came stock with LSD's and that they are compatible with mine. Can anyone tell me if this is right and if it is going to be worth the extra cash? What ratio would mine be and what year/model hilux would have an LSD with the same ratio as mine that would bolt in without any dramas? Cheers!

Yes that will fit. not sure on your ratio. best way to find out is to count the teeth on the crown wheel and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion. the hilux lsd don't last long and aren't very good. my advice would be to replace the center with a locker otherwise i wouldn't bother with the lsd.

I'm almost certain that your model will have 4.88:1 diff gears. You can get another centre complete with an LSD from an 88-97 petrol 22R powered hilux. Unfortunatley, as has been said, the hilux LSD is renound for premature wear. However these are rebuildable and dropping the donor centre into a diff shop should have you sorted with a nice tight LSD.

Disclaimer - count the teeth before you purchase (on both your original one and the one you're buying).

To check the ratio on yours without pulling the centre, you can jack one wheel up and count how many tyre revolutions it takes for the tailshaft to do one complete revolution then divide it by two to get a number like 4.88, 4.5 or 4.3. I'm thinking yours would be 4.88

Good luck
