my mate has a TJ and wants to know whats the biggest tyres/rims he can fit without any lift. differnt tyer places have said different things. thanks

guessing different opinions were because they don't know how big he wants the bump stops
realistically he should stick to 31's as a max.
and i don't know many 31's that are wider than 10.5".. so stock rims will do the job.

How much lift will he need to fit 33x10.5? what are the bump stops?

Procomp does the Xterrain in 31/12.5 Thor.


Bump stops are the things in the middle of the coils that limit the coil compression. Basically, the gap between the top and bottom should be less than the gap between the top of the tyre and the guard.

Without any modificatons or without a lift

In short, depends on what you want to do, around town with the right bumpstops why not, but offroad no.

I will be give Suburban a free plug and say check out the RE Super ride 3.5" kit which will clear 33's. They are the Rubicon Express distributer for Oz, but there are a couple of dealers in Melbourne - I believe TW at USA4x4 and also Lexx at JBitz do the RE gear (so does Wooders above in Sydney).

Because you mention 2.5" lift, I assume you are looking at the OME kit. I think you will need to add either 1"BL or 1" coil spaers with this. I ran 33x10.5" with a Teraflex 3" system with no rubbing. You can talk to USA4x4 about the Tera systems. You should be able to get the kit without the flexy arms as per the RE kit above.

Anyway, no matter which of the many kits you end up choosing, I would say for 33's you want 3" minimum lift with appropriately extended bumpstops.

But as other have said, if you don't want flex and just want the tyres then sure the OME kit would be enough with long bumpstops.

i had 31x10.5" on standard rims with standard lift no rubbing at all.

and i now havee 33x12.5" on 15x8 rims and 2" ome lift with 1" bl works great on and offroad.

Traditionally yes........But I wouldn't if I was to redo my heep.
I'd cut the rear and HiHood the front. JP mag just fitted 35's to a stock height TJ by doing basically just that.....

jeep97tj uses 2 inch springs and 1 inch blocks for 37's and has great flex off road...

remember with lift, bigger isn't better

Yep, and hasn't he cut the rear guards and raised the front guards as well Pretty much what Wooders said.

Really? I didn't realise any decent photo's have come out of WA.... last I noticed we where all to busy wheeling to have the time to pose for pic's!!

To answer your question, as the others have said 3" lift is probably a good number for 33's... you could do it with 2" OME and 1" coil spacers, just pick your shocks carefully.

I never wheeled with him when he had the 33's. But with the 37's he has 3' lift plus 2.5" virtual lift.

I know I would rather sacrifice a little up travel to save a bit of COG. Something to think about.

And you are right, the jeep is good for the road.... that's why it is the tow rig for the buggy
