Noise!! I cant drown it out with the stereo any more!

Ok, the noise starts at about 60kph and contiues to get louder/higher pitch as speed increases. It goes away when clutch pedal is depressed
(clutch disengaged??) then comes back as soon as pedal is released. (same pitch in any gear, pitch is relevant to speed. revs also have no effect)
Can anyone tell me what bearing it would be, and how hard / expensive it would be to replace, I'm fairly certain it is coming from the gearbox/tfer case area.
What else should I replace while I have her in bits?
And No, I cant afford a louder stereo :(

most likely the clutch thrust bearing.
gear box needs to come out, but the bearing is cheap, and very easy to fit.
I got mine for about $22 from Advanced Clutch & Brake in Croydon (VIC)
But they can last a long time makin noise, but can also die fast.

if you can do it yourself then not more then $3-400 Im just saying that cause people dont tend to spend more then that fixing suzies.
I have nfi what it would be. try changing your oils I had water in my rear diff and it got real loud. I changed the oil and the sound went away. as you described it was only at speeds over 60kmh.

yeah could be in need of all new oils...driveline noises sometimes go away when you press clutch, as pressure is taken off the bits.....
try putting t-case in neutral, then play with engine, clutch and gears, see if noise is still there..that could rule out rear diff and t shaft etc.
also when driving, feel the sticks, see if u can feel the noise, that may tell you gear box or t case.....

Thanks Guys,
Just ran with the Tcase in Neutral, Good Idea that, theres a definate marbles rolling around kind of noise.
I've narrowed it down to output of gearbox or input to Tcase. The noise is coming from that area and it is output speed related rather than input rev related. I'm pretty sure it's the Tcase
What would be the best way to fix it up? is there a kit, or should I just get bearings? do the bearings need pressing or anything like that?
Stock Tcase, 89, 1.3 Sierra
could this be a good excuse to get series 3???

check the jack shaft unis, too, they can seize on one axis, and not be obvious from outside

Change the oils and look for any chunky bits in the old oil, new or thicker oil might quieten it down a bit too.
Possible best cheap option wor someone with limited mechanical knowledge is pick up a second hand box and/or transfer and swap it.

Get a sub and amp thats what i did lol
but seriously, my transfur is at the moment that loud that in 3rd gear i need to crank it right up, it is just mainly berings, i put a bit of grease and 85/140 oil in and that quient it up 4 a bit but basicly it is stuffed, get new gears/berings.

I was quoted $365 from bearing wholesales in Bayswater, for the complete kit to re build the transfer case myself. Does this sound right or are there cheaper options?
does anyone have a good tranny lying around?
how hard is it to DIY a tranny?

Is a 1ltr tranny a better option? how does a 1ltr trans go on the highway? I currently have 30's

1.0 litre t-case is about 12% lower in hi and low range.
Most people who have done this are happy.
Probably a lot cheaper option, but only if you get a good one.
