Sheared axle studs

How common is it to shear axle studs in a HJ60 and is there anyway to prevent it happening again? I sheared the studs and two dowels the other day doing simple driving... Can you get stronger studs or anything along those lines?

you can upgrade the studs to larger diametre 100series studs

you need to get an engineer shop to drill the axle end to take the larger cone washers, then you drill and tab your hub to take larger studs.

you can get the studs and cone washers from toyota, and then you need to get someone to drill your axle.

Anyway to do it your self or do you need specified tools?

there are several posts here on the axle stud upgrade. I think that with regular checking and tightening the stud upgrade is unecessary. No doubt others will disagree.

the problem with axle studs is that people overtighten the nuts when reassembly the hubs, which causes the M8 bolts to stretch and weaken, if people tightened them correctly not over tightening then they wouldn't snap or shear.

I had this happen in my 60 just as I was getting to Newy a few months back.. just normal round town driving too. You could see where one was broken for a while and another was cracked due to the 'dirty' marks where they snapped. Creating a weakness then snappage.

Pulled the axle out & plugged the seal so no oil was lost, then taped it all up til I got home driving with the rear locker in. I was going to gt the 100 series done to it, but $$ wouldn't allow. Had a machinist mate that fixed it all up for me with new studs etc.

My advice, go the larger 100 series studs... it'll make it stronger in the end and less worry about it happening again. I'll be doing this when I get the time to do it.

Cheers,
Brighty.
