Yeah... its not good for it
especially if you are in 4wd it'll wind up the transfer
If its out of 4wd then you just chew more fuel... at least I think I've never done it...
Why do you ask?

yes you can

if its in 4wd you can get windup and break stuff

it is recomended that you drive on road every so often with hubs locked to keep oil circulating through diff etc. especially if you dont go in 4wd very often.

You can have the hubs locked in 2wd, as stated it's recommended to do this once a month or so if you're not wheeling. Might chew a little more fuel, but nothing to worry about. Having the hubs locked in 2wd is just like the front end on full time 4wds, doesn't hurt it. ;)

yep check your manual..... mine recomends locking the hubs every month....
Oh there was an article in 4 x 4... maybe last month...very interesting... confirming ths as well as a comment about selecting and deselecting 4WD on the move....

There is nothing wrong with driving on road in 2wd with the hubs locked in general, but the stupid toyota engineers made it so that the cv and axle is supported by a bronze bush, not a roller bearing. If your car is old don't do it. It will wear out much quicker.

if your car is an old landcruiser it wont have free wheeling hubs but drive flanges!!! I had drive flanges on an 83 model landcruiser ( was swapped in replacement of the freewheeling hubs) and drove it for years and years and had no problems. I also drove an 81 model landcruiser with the freewheeling hubs locked for years and years and had no problems. I have little experience with driving with the freewheeling hubs unlocked though..... so i guess i am unsure if it causes extra wear or not, but i never noticed any problems.

Instead of starting a new thread...

Is it ok to drive with the whole hub off? I can't see how it would hurt, just a short drive without?

When you say drive with the whole hub off, i assume you just mean the locking gear?

You can drive with it partially disassembled. Although, grease will go everywhere. Its not really a good idea, but i guess it really depends on how desperate you are.

Why do you ask?

It's all good now. I pulled it off and was checking it out, but snapped my circlip pliers and couldn't get it back on. I was going to drive to my mates to use is but I just did it with screwdrivers. :? Thanks, Joel.

Ok... heres a relevant question from me...

I have a powertrax locker in the front of mine.. It seems that even if i drive in 2wd with my hubs in that its feels that at certain times me wheels are locking up. Can this be possible?

THanks :?:

Wont matter as the hubs are out. They will just free wheel, with the hubs disengaged the cv's arn't connected to the wheels.
