Donks for Sierra

Okay here's the deal, I'm buying a 1.3l or g13a as they're called to slowly rebuild and then chuck it in my sierra. I know some holden barinas and some suzuki swifts have these same engines. Theres no sierras at the wrecker but I found a couple of these front wheel drive engines and I'm thinking of taking one maybe next week.

Can I take an engine out of a barina or swift and pop it straight into my sierra, are there any issues I need to be aware of? I read something about the distributor being different and it might hit the firewall or something but I checked them out today, they seem absolutely fine. So am I good to go?

Also if anyone has one for sale let me know cause I'll be paying $185 for a full one at pickapart next week.

using a front wheel drive engine you need too get a distribator and camshaft from a sierra motor and swap it in apart from that it will be pretty strait forward. ps 185 for the engine is a bargain :P

If they have a right angle dizzy, then they are the easiest to swap in.
You need to change over the sump, oil pick up and dipstick.
And re use all your Sierra add ons, like manifolds etc.
Some have multi v belts, so in that case use the swift alternator, they are better anyway.
swifts used thermo fans, and the sierra fan won't bolt on.
I imagine there is fans that would?
I had a mate turn up an boss/adaptor for the sierra fan.
Some models have different pulleys n belts, and may not have this issue..

I have a late model swift import engine in mine.

$185 is just the standard price at pickapart or pinchapart as I like to call it for a full 4 engine without warranty. Can't I keep the same cam? I don't see it making a difference unless the distributor has to be changed and the cam along with it. Whats the problem with leaving it as it is, is there some problem with the dizzy? Also how about the sump and pickup, can I use the ones from the barina or swift. This is getting a little harder than I originally thought, I though same engine just swap it over.

If they have the right angle dizzy then there is no need to change the cam. best to grab that type of engine, much easier.
You have to use the sierra sump and pick up, the swift sump will hit the front diff pumpkin, its totally different shape.
It is very easy to change them over.
just don't be an idiot like me.
I forgot to drain the oil before I took the sump off :roll: what a mess :))
It's not a straight swap, but if you can change an engine, you are capable of doing this swap.
Lots on here are happy to help with ideas, suggestions etc. as you go.

Hahaha, thats one of the funniest things I've heard. Man thats made my night. Hahahhahahah Don't worry I've pulled worst shit. Every time I test drive my car after a job I have screwdrivers, spanners and even hammers fall onto the road that I had left under the bonnet or even spanners still attached to bolts. I always hear big clunking sounds and then see a tool bounce up and down on the road behind me in my mirror.

Yeah that finally makes sense about the sump and pickup, it's good to get an explanation on stuff instead of just yes's and no's. That shouldn't be a problem with that. I'm thinking now about the dizzy, what do you mean the right angle dizzy. The dizzy's I have seen on the swifts, barinas and on my sierra are all on an angle pointing left if you get what I mean. Whats the issue with the differn't dizzy?

some dizzies point straight out back of engine, or the side on a front wheel drive, this type hit the sierra firewall...some cut the firewall and remove heater, but thats barbaric :)
On most sierras dizzy kicks up to vertical to miss the firewall, with a slight lean.
On some swift/barinas its just swap the dizzy over...
but on some others end of cam that drives the dizzy is totally different.

I've just put a swift engine in my sierra.

As far as I know, all of the older square swifts/ barinas ran the right angle distributor.

The cam in this motor has a gear on the end that drives the dizzy.

The cams in the later motors don't have this gear, it's just a hole in the end of the cam with a keyway which the shaft from the dizzy slides into.

The only troubles i had were that i didn't see the pin that runs off the cam to drive the fuel pump, so the cam would slide back and forth a bit but wouldn't come out. Came out real easy when i pulled that pin!

Trying to get the above mentioned pin into the new engine was a bit of a pain. The hole it was supposed to go into was all caked up with old dirty oil carbon etc... It took ages to get all that gunk out, but it all seems fine now.

Both the belt and the offset on the sierra alternator was different, you may need to use the swift alternator and belt as i did.

Just out of interest, Pickapart has frequent sales. I got my swift engine with under 80,000 odd ks on it for $100

Hey richofoz, when did you get this engine. I'm just gonna wait for the special in that case. I knew that pickapart had specials each week you know, bonnets 20 bucks some weeks and so on but I might be waiting a while for the engine special. When did you get it?

hey guys

just after some info about engine conversions, in the middle of one myself. putting in a 92-94 model gti motor into my holden drover. had to get to buy an ECM as one didn't come with the motor but don't know which wire hooks up where. if anyone has a swift motor with an ECM with three wires could you please let us know what colour wire goes where. it is embarassing as there are only three wires but don't want to be frying everything.

i got 2 engines in my garage both have a cracked ring in 4th cylinder if you were inbrissy you could have one but i think to ship it down there would cost more than to buy one.

Not sure exaxctly how often the sales on engines in particular.
I just called up for a price and the guys said to wait a week because they'd be on sale then.
Give them a call and see what they have to say?

Funny you say that cause I actually went there and spoke to them and all I got was this woman giving me attitude. I might ring em up I think. Doesn't sound right them telling you to wait a week they make less money that way.

I thought it was strange too. The guy on the phone was great,
but when I actually went down there and got the engine, both the woman and the bloke behind the counter were dickheads.

I guess you don't get much service for a dollar!

Ha, pickapart Campbellfield huh? I go in there EXPECTING attitude. Then occasionally theres the odd nice bloke. Hey so what did they say to ya on the phone? Let me get this straight, engine special next week?
