Questions on fitting a LSD into a Feroza...

For anyone who has done an open wheeler to LSD conversion:
Can just the diff centre be swapped over- or does the whole diff need to be changed? I'm looking at doing it to a '92
narrow track- if that makes any difference?
What sort of price do wreckers generally charge (centre or whole diff assy)?
Do the LSD's last well, or generally need a rebuild if a few years old?
Has anyone got a price from Daihatsu for a new LSD centre?
Are there any alternatives from the factory LSD?
Thanks

1. As far as I am aware....just the centre needs swapping
2. Wreckers charge too much (in general) and even more for parts that come along as often as hen get teeth !!
3. Depends on how you treat your fourby.....if you thrash it, sure, it will need a rebuild sooner than later.
4. Daihatsu prices - not sure if they actually have any in stock, or whether or not they still make them (I have a feeling they don't make them anymore) I recall ringing around a few years ago trying to chase one and had no luck from Daihatsu or any wreckers !
5. Only alternatives would be a CIG/BOC locker or a soft locker ?Detroit
I think it would be easier to weld your diff, less time and money trying to get an LSD !!
Good Luck in trying to find one

OR you could put diffs from another truck beneath it and get AIR LOCKERS.......like me !

Yeah, I'd like the V6 as well! Actually the V6 out my Mondeo would be a nice engine to slip in too- 2.5 litre V6 , 7000RPM cut out...... mmmmm...... easily upgradeable to over 150kW.....
I may have located a LSD, just wanted a heads up on what's involved before (or "if") I go pursuing it any further.
So as far as you know there's no difference between the narrow and wide track diff centre?

Widetrack & Narrowtrack Diff Centres are identical - only the centre needs swapping to fit the LSD, but of course you have to be good at Diff Setups to DIY. If you pull your Diff Centre out & take it & the LSD to a Diff Specialist expect around $350 to swap it over & to get it serviced.
Feroza LSD's are pretty good - but like all friction devices will wear over time. Mine typically needed servicing every 50k km. Get them to shim it up really tight as well, mine chirped around corners for the 1st few 1000km after servicing ;-) Better offroad though.
You can get rear LSD's & 5.51 R&P Gears from a Jap Import Wrecker in Melbourne - Toyhatsu I think was the name. Got a complete front & rear diffs with rear LSD & 5.51 Gears for $1100 - sold the rear LSD for $500. Rear LSD & Front Lincoln Locker is great combo :-)
Good Luck -

Mike.....how long ago did you actually get your centres from Toyhatsu ??
I've recently been there trying to get a few other bits for my Feroza and they only had 2 Feroza wrecks in.....been like that for the last couple of years !

G'Day Besty,
Yeah - it's been a while ;-) Probably about 2 years ago now. I have never actually been there since I am in Sydney & they are in Melbourne - so I only dealt with them via email. Guy was really helpful though. If you think LSD's are hard to get, then try & find the Auto Feroza only 5.51 R&P's !! ;-)
They not only could get them, but asked me how many I wanted !! Told them I wanted front & rear complete Diffs ( LSD just happened to be on the rear one ) & they sourced them & freighted them to Sydeny for me. I was then going to do the Auto Feroza gearbox as well & they sourced that for me as well - Getting Feroza parts didn't seem to be a hassle.
Also going back to the Rear Locker alternative as well - the Diff Specialist in Sydney quoted me $2000 drive-in Drive-out to do a Hilux Rear Axle swap with 5.29 R&P gears ( to match original front Feroza gears ) & an ARB Air Locker. They would swap the original Feroza Drums onto the Hilux Axle so brakes / wheels would stay the same. So not only running an Air Locker, but the bigger 8" Toyota Diff & larger Hilux Axles as well. This was a pretty good deal at the time I thought - but in the end I just went with the front Lincoln Locker & saved the money for the complete Front & Rear Hilux Axle swap ( which I never got round too :-( )
Oh well -

Hello Mike, thanks for the info I didn't realise you were on Outerlimits. I've been to your website a couple of times- there's lots of useful stuff on there.
I noticed you listed your rear diff was a Power Trax LSD on your site, but I've been to Power Trax's site and they don't list a Feroza/USA Rocky application??

Hi Mike, good 2 see u on outerlimits 8)
Just wondering if Toyota brought out the hilux with 5.51 diff ratios so an auto feroza diff centre can be fitted 2 the front and put the hilux 5.5 in the back with an air locker

Couple of replies in one here ;-)
Been on Outerlimits for a little while, just don't get a chance to drop in too often. Come to think of it, don't get a chance to do any real web / email stuff anymore :-(
It was my understanding that the factory Daihatsu LSD was actually made by Powertrax for Daihatsu - when I bought my Feroza new I wanted the optional factory LSD for $500 but was told I would have to wait 6 months for a Feroza to come from Japan with one fitted !! So bought one with an open diff & took it to Diff Trans in Sydney who fitted the only available LSD for a Feroza, which he found out is the factory one but available thru Powertrax dealer. I'm sure being made only for the Diahatsu factory that Powertrax never had it listed on their normal records, & stopped making them many years ago anyway - so the only alternative now is to find a 2nd hand factory one. Curiously Daihatsu Japan also made a few one-off electric Rear Lockers for the Rear Feroza Diff for the Australian Safari way back in around 1993 or so - & when I was asking about the LSD they could have supplied me with one !! for around $2500 though :-(
Only thing you can do is keep searching for a factory one.....they are around, I had 3 in my pocession at stage - sold them all pretty quick too ;-) The early EL-I's & EL-II's tend to have LSD's in them I believe in a lot more cases.
G'Day James,
Yep, still lurking around ;-) Can't seem to get over the Daihatsu thing, kinda like the whole ex-girlfriend thing - you know ;-)
How's the Coil Sprung beast going ??
Actually I stuffed up slightly ;-) the Auto Feroza had 5.57:1 R&P's. These are a Feroza only ratio as far as I know.
Hilux ratio's for the 8" Diff come in 4.1's, 4.3's, 4.56's, 4.88's, 5.29's ( same as Feroza manual ) & 5.71's. So you can do a Hilux rear axle swap & put 5.29's & an Air Locker in the rear & keep the same ratio - see my earlier post.
Later guys,

The beast is going just fine
I wanna lift it more, was thinking about fitting balljoint spacers and flip on the front 2 get more height. A mate is in the process of doing it 2 his holden rodeo so I'll see whats involved and how much more height can be gained from the modification.
What are your thoughts on doing the balljoint spacer/flip on a feroza?

LSD questions again....
Does anyone know for sure if the diff ratios for the manual and auto Ferozas are 5.51 and 5.57 respectively? Meaning if I located a 5.57 LSD centre it wouldn't be any good for my manual Feroza?
The info posted previously would appear to say that?

G'Day David,
Manual Feroza's have 5.29 Diff Ratio's
Auto Feroza's have 5.57 Diff Ratio's ( 5.51 was my mistake - I meant 5.57 ;-) )
If you were able to find a complete Diff 3rd Member ( ie: the whole Diff Centre that bolts to the pumpkin part of the axle ) then you could do a straight swap of 3rd Members but only if the Ratios are the same.
BUT - if you find an Auto 5.57 3rd member then you can still use the LSD out of it in yours - you will just need a Diff Specialist to swap it over for you. The LSD Carrier bolts to the Ring Gear - & will bolt up to either Auto or Manual Ring gears the same. So you simply pull your 3rd Member out, strip the LSD Carrier out of the other Diff Centre, Strip the Open Diff Carrier out of your Diff Centre - then get a Diff Specialist to reinstall the lot & reinstall the Diff Centre with LSD in your Feroza. This is not a bad way to go anyway as you can get the LSD serviced at the same time.
Hope this helps -

Thanks Mike, perfect timing to "reappear"!
You lost me with all the diff mumbo jumbo (never worked on a diff before), but the bottom line is it can be used. I was going to take it to a diff place to get it fitted anyway.
I just have to verify it is an LSD now- the price seems too good!

Bugger man. Keep looking you might find one soon.
Be careful though some wreckers charge top dollar. I had a broken fan resistor and got a price through the wreckers. They wanted $45 plus $5 for freight
I ended up getting a new one for around $45 including frieght costs

Jeez don't know if I'd fancy a Lincoln locker in the rear
at least you can disengage the front hubs! Good luck with your lead Leon.
Have you actually bought those Vitara lockers? They're a good find, pity they weren't for a Feroza.
The wrecker only wanted $225 for this "LSD" I had found, hence I wasn't really surprised to find out it was a normal diff.
