Hi,
So I learned a good trick today for diagnosis of dead cylinders in a diesel engine that runs, just crack the injectors of each cylinder in turn and the ones that don't change the pitch of the engine are the ones that are broken. Sounds pretty obvious but worth knowing.
The bad news is that I am two pistons down in my Nissan TD42, #2 and #3 came up as not working which explains the huge amounts of gas blowing out the top of my rocker cover.
Anyway, I am trying to decide whether to do the rebuild myself with specialists to do the hard stuff that needs special tools or get one organisation to do the whole lot.
Can anyone recommend an engine builder that they have direct experience of that has worked on TD42s in the past?
Thanks in advance,
Richard.

Repco in the old days had a really bad reputation for using shit parts in rebuilds.
Give Sandy a call at aus4wd in Bayswater.
Greg at escape 4x4 in blackburn (the old Russells site)
4x4 trader has a place in Qld selling TD42s in there as well.
Bruce, I think you'll find that most shops will simply send the engine staight to their own engine reconditioner nearby and simply add a charge as a middleman. If your getting it rebuilt your better off dealing with an accredited reconditioner who can do all the work in the one premises rather than sending it away.
We're pretty good friends with the owner of Dandy Engine Reconditioning ( in Carrum Downs go figure ) I haven't got their phone No here but they are in Concorde Crescent Carrum Downs. The owner Lou is a straight shooter and he can do all the work in house except for cam grinding which is very specialised.
Maybe give him a call and say that Andrew from D&F racing said to have a chat about your problems. Just ask for Lou.
Regards Andrew.

Thanks for the link but would prefer to rebuild my own for that rather than buy a used engine of similar age.
I have a number of additional quotes. Berryman in Moorabbin reckon that they would charge around $4500 for complete rebuild. They are the guys who do all the serious rebuilding for Brighton Nissan so they have done a lot of Nissan engines including TD42s.
I will also get my pump rebuilt and injectors cleaned since it was a little weepy.
If the block and head are cracked I may sell the Denco kit and buy a Chev V8 instead.
