ok now i have to clear this up what are the shims used for in a hub kit??
someone who will remain nameless (assclown) told me and his old man that they are for castor on a leaf sprung vehicle?
so what the hell are they for

they are to set the preload on the king pin bearings.
very basically the procedure is to pull it all apart and clean it all up, install the nea king pin bearings, with the old shimmage, without the wiper seal etc, and measure the turning effort required for the knuckle. add/subreact shims to get the preload right. ideally, haved equal shim thickness top and bottom (especially on early cruisers/luxes, the early inner seals don't have a lot of give)

Yes they are used to set the preload on the kingpin bearings but the shim postion can vary between the top and bottom to set up the inner axle central in the seal. I have done this procedure when fitting front disc brakes to early Cruisers. I made up a tool for this task some years ago and it worked well, if you look at a Toyota factory workshop manual it goes into heaps of detail in setting this up. If im overhauling the front end and putting all the original parts back just replacing all bearings and seals i just put the original shims back in there original places and never had a problem. ( ive chucked out so many packs of shims cause ive never needed them)
