reducing throttle sensitivity

I have the 1KZ turbo diesel efi in my 84 lux. It has cable throttle linkage but it is sooo sensitive. For normal driving I hardly need to move the pedal so it is very jerky taking off and driving over really bumpy terrain.

Any ideas on how to give the pedal more travel and slow the throttle response. Thinking I could shorten the arm on the pedal or use another pedal from a different model, or put in a pulley to make a double line pull and halve the pedal rate.

With EFI motors can you adjust the throttle response electronically?

Its not jerky with the pedal mashed into the floor which is where it should be

Try resting the outside of your shoe against the kick panel

fit a 2nd return or a heavier spring as suggested

A mate has a turbo hilux and it is jerky as. He even fitted a D Tronic and that made it worse. Very annoying but I think you have to live with it unless you can get someone to tune it out somehow?

okay correct me if i wrong not knowing that motor correctly but i know on the serria you could follow the throttle cable, and it will go to a round thing oh what you call it. why not just put a larger one, on , means a bigger amount of throttle needed for same effect.

As has been suggested you have to slow the throttle reponse which means either shortening the arm that pulls the cable or if it has a curved or round 'drum ' on the actual engine end of the cable increase its diameter.
Hard to explain but what you want is less throttle for a given travel of the pedal inside so as to slow the engines response to pedl movement.
I'd try the extra or stronger spring first as it is probably only needed off road or on bumpy surfaces.
another way is to use a short ocky strap to give extra reistance.

try pushing your knee into the door to brace your leg sort of

Put a car wash sponge under pedal...

Put it this way. If the range of movement in the pedal is 100% then I only need to use about 20 % of it to get full throttle response. If I depress the pedal any further it doesnt achieve much except in low gears where it will obviously just redline. IE for daily driving the pedal doesnt move more than 20% of its range even when accelerating hard.

I know that I need to change the pedal length or the diameter of the pulley but I was just asking to see if somebody had any knowledgable experience in fixing the problem and by that I dont mean resting my foot against the side wall. It cant be that difficult to alter the ratio of the throttle.

PS thankyou HOONZ for your insightful thread!

um sum of the jeep boys have been installing hand throttles cheap and easy for all the crawling stuff :D

GU's they put a chunk of foam rubber under the pedal.... works.

look at either the pivot point inside the cab and raise it so the pedal travels further for a given throttle opening or look at the pivot on the carb/ throttle body etc. the cable wraps around so the throttle is not opened exponentially. if this is setup wrong it willbe touchy. look at the ring from the side and see whats happening for a given throttle opening at different amounts of pedal depression and adjust so the most dead part is at the start of the pedal travel.

cheers bru
