Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The rear diff in my hilux (ln106) has a bit of a ting noise in it when moving off and I was told it's a loose pinion. I put an air locker in it about 25000k's ago but didn't replace the bearings cause they were ok at the time.
I can get a bearing kit for $160 locally (or $170 genuine toyota) but is it worthwhile getting a solid spacer for it? If so what model do I have to get it from? Or can I buy a kit with a solid spacer/shims ?

It also leaks oil between the diff centre and housing after landing on the tailshaft while trying to jump a log I think it might have pulled the studs in the housing. Anyone else done this, how do you fix it?

If you have stripped the threads and a longer bolt wont hold, you will have to get a Helicoil Kit and repair the hole.

yeah u can buy solid pinion spacers seperate most diff shops should b able 2 make one if not, and yes get a solid spacer coz u will make the centre twice as strong, wot i mean by this is that if u het the pinion flange on a rock while u r driving forward it can and will collapse the spacer therefore making the pinion come loose, where as with a solid it cant collapse and u wont upset the bearing preload and it will all b good..

and the oil leaking, basically wots seems 2 have happened is u have stretched the studs, just try tightening them up a bit and c if it stops leaking. the other alternative is 2 remove the centre and remove all the studs and replace them with new studs and also put in a new gasket and use plenty of silonce sealant so that it will flex wen u hit it rather than just breaking the seal and it will start 2 leak...

Solid spacers can be bought from Repco or Toyota. They are a part # for the really early generation 1 hiluxs. Shims are also available from Toyota.

I just bought 3 spacers and 50 shims this week

I allready put a gasket and silastic in there when i did the locker and it still leaked after a while. I might have to remove the studs and file the surface flat maybe?
