Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Morning All

I'm going to be purchasing some 35" muds in the next 2-3 months and was hoping for some +'ve feedback.

I'm leaning towards Kumho 834's ($257ea) (the new pattern) but I've read some bad things, I assume (hope) the old pattern, but I'm still cautious, hence this post.

Having heard bad stuff also about BFG MT KM (compared with old pattern), I'm also cautious about spending $300 per tyre on these. I've also got quotes for Cooper STT's ($278).

What about Kelly Safari DTR's, and where do you get them?

Me personally would not go for the Kumho's, yes they are cheap but they are no where near as strong as BFG's!

One thing i always look at is SIDE WALL stregth!

The BFG and GOODYEAR mtr both have Really good side walls for what they are!

Have you LOOKED at the MTR its very popular with guys that street and wheel a variety of different terrain, i have seen them work really well on ROCKS and dirt hill climbs, i have not seen them in MUDS to often to comment on there performance!

I have seen both the MTR and BFG MT through mud

the MTR wins hands down.. and apparantly they are a good rock tyre too.. you get heaps of k's on road out of them as they have some silica compound in the tyres

Robbie, you really reckon that the MTR's beat the BFGs in the mud? I've never seen the MTRs in mud, but from what I can gather the general concensus is that the MTRs rock on rock, but blow on mud (well at least real Mexiacan mud).

Where abouts did you see them in mud? What sort of mud?

I have 35" MTR's and have found them better in the slick Toolangi stuff than BFG's. I found that they didn't need to dig for traction like the BFG's do.

However I seriously doubt the sidewall strength of the MTR's.... already got a small hole in one. Perhaps I should have gone for X-terrains.......

How do the MTR's wear on the road compared to the old style BFG muds? I've gotten 40,000 out of the BFG's in a 33" so far with another 20,000 left in them. I've heard many reports that the KO's don't last. Is this true?

Seriously if you want lots of km's out of a set of tyres you don't buy mud types.

I can't comment on how long they last cos I haven't had a set for long enough. Although Ive done close to 10,000kms on the MTR's and they still look new (Except for the full lug missing that caught on a guard!).

When I had the KM muds on my old car, they were all cut and sliced after only a few thousand kms.

Well I've got a set of 35" MT Claws (radial) and they seem to handle the Neerim South mud ok. I used to have as et of 33" Cooper STT's I was pretty happy with them but the MT's are heaps better, I should clarify by MT's I mean Mickey Thompsons not BFG Mt's.

I've got a set of 31" Kelly DTRS. They are okay, but not great. Tread is descent for rocks, but there is no sidewall protection at all and they seem pretty thin (I've got little tears after only a little use), lugs chunk out quite easily..

I'd recommend the MTRs from what I have seen, definetly my next tyre.
