Simex choices

Post by Brad C »

:D Hi to all ,
Im chasing opinions on the Simex tires , I currently have 255x85x16 BFG m/t and with some cutting and flares comming I would like to up grade to a 35 x10.5 x16 Simex , but i have had so many different angles of pitch by the 2 dealers over here on whether to fit the Simex Jungle Trekkers II or the Etreme Trekker Centapede on .Some say stay with 33 x 10.5x16 ?
I was wondering the honest points of veiw from those who have tried either or both on a Rover .

Im also chasing the number to Eastern Wheel Works on Philip Island if available , would like to get my grubby mits on a set of the rims on Mike Smiths RR as they look awhole lot stronger than the ol off set Disco rims :P

Thanx in advance !!

The Extreme Trekkers seem to be a bit better in mud than the JT2s. They are directional and the big lugs stick out a bit more and are more irregularly spaced.
They are awful on the road, on sand, and on grass. I kept my BFGs for those trips, and the ETs for the mud.
The JT2s are a little more civilised that the ETs, but not much.

When you go to 35's you will most likely break stuff and have to upgrade your drivetrain, and maybe change your R&Ps to get your gearing back. If you want to avoid that staying with 33's may be a wise move.

Thanx for that , i went to one of the dealers again today and after much deliberation i ordered a set of 5 Jungle trekkers 33x10.5x16 , the exteme trekers being directional would mean 2 spares and about $40 per tyre more each . Im off to do some cutting on the back quarter panels now from just under the light to the viscinity of the rear of mudflap .
Thanx Low box for your opinion !

this is for my family / camping / play car , i have a 78 2 door thats going to be for comps , but still being built up and that will have 35's on . I realise 35's are better for ground clearance but i will have to go to ARB and get them to install an escalator for the leader of opisition to get in and out . My 87 is more an all rounder , the 2 door i have no intentions of going half measures on . :D

Dont get me wrong , i cut into and muk around with the 87 alot , but it has to be multi purpose .The 78 is solely for off road and the only on road it will do is on the way to a comp. But time and money for everything is slowing me down at the moment . aaaahhh for Lotto ha ha ha

With the crap ride I doubt you would have noticed whether the Centipede was on backwards or not...

35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35 35.....

Don't fight it.

They always start as the family car and then before you know it you have another family car to keep them out of your favourite other off-roader... always go as big as you can saves redoing it in 6 months :finger:

Be warned that :Fade-color bodges obsession with the number 35 is actually the number of times he has had to fix breakages caused by running... 34's... :finger: :finger:

ha ha ha 35's hey , yeah i will get a set but not for this one , its cheaper to buy another set for the up n comming 78 model , rather than replace the hairy lasoe as that gets half of everything ha ha ha and they are a spite-full mob ha ha

the j trekkers wont be in for a few days so im still muckin around with the cutting side of things , and may get a set of the flares dunno have to see how many paseo's i have left . Its good to see that even 1 inch devides kiwi's ha ha ha

thanx for your opinion guys , tis great !

Brad,

Unless your are competing I would stick with the 33's. The 35's are an advantage, but not worth all those weekends fixing shit and better off drinking beer and off roading (not at the same time of course!!!!) Like others have mentioned, you will need to upgrade your driveline. Ground clerance doesn't mean shit if you keep breaking stuff, but it helps if you don't mind fixing your Rangie reguarly!!

Personally, I would only run 32's with the stock Rangie running gear. I contemplated going for 33's but couldn't be botherd doing another body or spring lift and only running 31's at present ( 32's next time).also only have a ARB locker with 10 spline rear end (OUCH!!!), but I have about 5 sets of 10 spline axles complete so I always carry a set if the inevitable happens.

Amnyway, it's your choice and as long as your happy and having a ball, that's what counts.

Regards,

I have up graded my axles to Ashcroft , fine spline , with fully rebuilt front n rear diff , its already lifted 50mm in body and 3 inch in springs , the ZF was totally rebuilt last year by Auto mac , the transfer was redone last month by Rovertech , along with the CV's .I also have imported front arms Rovertym , the rear is on the way .This RR is for primerily for camping traveling , I will use this one as a family unit til the day she dies , and have the 78 for up n comming comps .But i would rather gain an informed opinion on the 33 vs 35 from those that have gone that route , as experiance is everything . 33'S are great for most applications but personally i wouldnt go smaller .

Thanx to all who gave advise , it was great ! But im still chasing Eastern Wheel Works number and a set of the 4 door Rangie Spare flares if anyone has a set ?

Brad, for camping/travelling the 33's are a good choice. If you've got a winch or travel with others, theres no real need to go bigger. I run 33's as standard and will go to 35's or 36's for harder day trips etc. It's not often I'd go camping when 35's would be needed.
As for a Rangie Spares flare kit I'd try Rangie spares!!
The chance of picking them up second hand would be friggin small!!!

Yeah i realise the % of getting them is small but i thunk $600 for the flares is a tad bit on tha loony side of the spectrum

I rang up Rangie Spares 5 months ago for a price and they were $430 and rang up 3 weeks ago to order them and they were $600 and $50 freight to Perth , i need to cut my guards and rear doors as the 33's foul on full travel but there is NO WAY i can justify $650 , so i will play the waiting game for a while first .

Thanx Tuffrr
