Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys, i own a LWB 88 maverick and there is a pretty bad noise coming from the front of the engine. My boss thinks its either a bearing or timing chain tensioner.... it gets faster if u rev,and its really loud.. it sounds like a loud diesel engine. anyone had this experiance or can help me???

What engine? petrol diesel? how many kms? service history? what are the fan belts and ac belts like... is there a loose idler pulley on one of those belts is it over heating? describe the noise in a bit more detail. Is it a growling sound or more of a high pitched sound? can you hear the sound at all revs?

oh also check the fan itself to make sure it has shit itself.

its an 88 4.2 petrol engine. done 262,000kms. engine is not over heating at all. we replaced all the belts about 3 months b4 the noise happened. I was on some rocks in low range i stopped the car to go fishing, got back to the car and there was a noise which i thought was sand flinging off the tyres onto the ground, it sounds like a loose chain.. but it could be a bearing, like to bering hitting each other all the time. the car doesnt handle or over heat at all.. but i have noticed that my oil gauge is either not working properly or my oil pressure is low.. very weird, i think its a common problem. im not burning oil and oil is changed every 10,000kms. I use hpr 15-60. I have gapped tappets which improved the noise a little but is still very overpowering to the normal engine noise. next oil change i will put hpr 30 in and see how the oil goes. i hope some one knows what i am talking about with this sound.. but i have pretty much come to the conclusion that its either a water pump bearing(possibly tightened the belt to tight, ive checked it buts its seems quite normal to me, and its not over heating) or a worn timing chain guide or tensioner.. both of these conclusions seem hard to belive but i dunno. anyone wanna comment.?

you could try lossening the water pump belt then try turning it by hand to "feel" any roughness... or bumpiness in the water pump bearings.

id tend to disconnect belts one at a time, to try and isolate which belt circuit it is coming from, then if no change, id start looking at other possibilities,

One thing, with the AC pump, they tend to get really noisy when the bearing flog out, try disconnecting AC belt and start her up, my GQ has this issue at the moment, and my dads GU also has the same thing,

As stated, check belts and accessories. Remove 1 at a time to isolate and start engine.

They dont have a timing chain!!!

The front of the motor is all geared driven....like a swiss watch!!!!

it its a knocking kinda noise ... coming from the front of the engine
could pretty much say its the a/c idler pully bearing
spesh if u been in mud and water a bit lately
$90 should see it fixed

Only TD42 is gaer driven. TB42 is chain driven..

ok well, mine is a tb42. therefore there is a timing chain and there is a timing chain guide, and there is a timing chain tensioner. Leaning towards either a worn guide or some sort of bearing, hopefully just a pully. My AC goes hard and my temp is totally normal. I have had this noise for about 5 months now and my water temp is still fine. i just wonder how long does this noise will go on for until some thing breaks!!!! its a tough one which i have challenged 6 mechanics on now... all with different answers. pretty funny. by the way my tappets are now perfect.

this all sounds very simular to my GQ ( problem started 3 days ago )

got in the car to go to work turned it on and there was a loud knocking sound from the front of the motor as i was running late i drove to the train got out with car idling no noise any more.

so over the last couple of days i have noticed it only happens when it is cold early mornings or nights if the days are warm no noise even if left overnight and noise dissapears after driving for 500m.

so guys any ideas on what to check am starting a new thread as well just thought it may be relevant here as well.

Can't see it being guides etc. That noise is more like a rattle at idle, a rollover type rattle and when you lift the revs it tends to go away. If it is occuring in the mornings and dissapears after warming up, surely it will oil pressure related, or something with worn tolerences and when it heats up expands and the noise disspears. Maybe a restricted or oil gallery. I have done timing chains on gqs before and know what the noise is. However it is still worthwhile disconnecting a belt at a time when cold to confirm that it is not accessory related

this noise stays even if i rev! it doesnt go away. even if the engine was hot, it still makes the same noise. But it is worse when the engine is cold. and it does get better, but by no means does it go away. it happens through any rev range.

start it up then switch the a/c on to put tension on the belt and it should be quieter . then u know its a belt or pulley
