ive come across a pretty decent looking 40series. looks like it has had a fair bit of money spent on it and isnt exactly going cheap.

its running a 308 with a stock 4spd. as im looking for a daily driver its also on gas, but im a bit worried about the transmission. its been suggested that i have a t700 (or something similar) put in it.
just wondering if anyone has had this done or roughly knows the dollars id b looking at?

thanks

What's to worry about? The 4spd is pretty rugged and handles V8s fine. The tranfer case on pre-1980 cruisers is relatively weak. Changing to a t700 won't help that. If you want an auto - go for it.

I have a stock 4spd. On sealed roads I start off in 2nd gear, so it like a three speed. Top gear isn't high enough

yeah the 4 speeds handle alot of abuse!!!!

if its been converted well it should be fine.

just be mindful you dont pay too much, once it gets a bit less shiny etc its never the same.
also did you use a magnet to check for rust??

good to see your still out there looking at 40s! TOP WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!

i've got a t700 in my shorty.after fitting the adapter for the transfer case the whole unit is friggin' long.I mean my rear tail shaft is only about a foot long, it has two unies & a slip joint only, so you have to careful with tail shaft angles. other than that you will probably need a body lift if you don't already have one, this will enable you to get the tranny up into the chassis further for better ground clearence. the bent tube that runs between the chassis rails will also have to be removed & your new gearbox mount will have to be substantial enough to stop the chassis rails from spreading apart. The transfer brake will have to be removed. i put hj60 rear brakes on mine & then that enabled me to put the hand brake straight to the rear axles. So as you can see there is a bit of stuffin around & if i've forgotten anything i'm sure someone else will fill in the gaps.Oh yeah it wont matter if the tranny you get needs a reco 'cause it has to be completely stripped to replace the input shaft. i'm running a v6 auto 'cause 1st gear ratio is suppose to be a bit lower & it only cost me $150.00. The adapter to a small block chev cost $400.00 from memory, got that from castlemain rod shop.

T700

Im currently running a T700 and im looking to change to a manual. it slips like a bitch and it pisses me off!!!! im still looking for a manual gearbox would fit with EXACT SAME bolt patterns/dimensions, ive had a suggestion for a T5 or a gertrag but i still need more modifications for those. Im currently running 3.8L v6 out of a series 2 VP and im using a marks adapter to fit to transfer case. Is there any way to stop slippage in the t700???

you could always go for a shift kit
