2.8d lux problems

Ive had my 92 2.8d d/cab lux for about 2 months now and im still having a few issues. (200k on the clock)

Issue 1: Blowing too much black smoke
Issue 2: White smoke and rough idle (only on cold start)

So far I've had a mechanic turn down the injector pump to stop the black smoke, which fixed the problem but took away what little power I had. Plus i've replaced all 4 glow plugs.

My questions:
1. How do i adjust the injector pump, im hoping to let in a little more fuel and settle for a happy medium of smoke/power.

2. What else could be causing my white smoke and rough idle on cold start

If I cant sort it myself I'm gonna have to drop it into toyota and pay an arm and a leg to get it sorted....

How long ago did you replace your glow plugs.

I know when i had my HJ60 i had to replace the glow plugs about every 12months :bad-words: .

Ok go and check to make sure the metal strap that joins the glow plugs is connected to all plugs, may be as easy as 1 plug not getting power to it, this is the only suggestion i could think of.Otherwise when Tuff truck is over my have to PM one of the mechanic guys on here see if they can give you a idea of some things to check.

A compression test may be in order. Best to take it to a Diesel specialistto do a full inspection and report.

The adjustment screw is the one above where the injector pipes go in.
Has a 12mm lock nut and a slot in the end DO NOT TURN MORE THAN ONE FLAT IN AT A TIME. Your old glow plugs did they look like the ends were melted off. If so you may require reco injectors. Pump timing or timing belt marks should also be checked.

had that done also!

dont know the figures, but the last mechanic i took it to was a diesel specialist. I also had it compression tested when i bought it and he said it had really good compression also

Somone mentioned timing, so maybe that could come into play

hmm, the glow plugs were covered in soot, but didnt look melted or damaged no.

I think i might just take it toyota and get them to do a decent check

So when your opening it up, you screw it out?

I screwed it out half a turn and the thing musnt have been getting any fuel, it was nearly stalling when taking off from a stand still.

Or does in mean more fuel?

How were the engine temps when you changed your fuel pump adjustment. A diesel will run hotter the richer the mixture (opposite of a petrol engine, which runs hotter when its lean)??
