You`ll break 5.29`s

I have 4.88`s and break them, I`ve broken 2 sets in the last 12 months. I`m running 36`s and a turboed 2.8

They are from old 70's hiaces with twin headlights and yes they do bust easy.

5.29`s have a smaller pinion then 4.8`s, so they will break easier, thats what I was gettting at.

Too easy, thanks guys. I never new that there was a twin light hi ace that came out. there was a single rounded light one which came out in 1977 would they have the right diff ratios????

They did come in some old 77 single headlight models, if the engine is a 12R ( 1600 ) then the diffs could be 5.29's. I found a real early hiace with a factory 5.71  tiny pinion !!

I asked the question a while back re after market 5.29's " are they any beefier than the factory ones " and nobody could tell me, could still be worth some investigation :?:

i have 5.29 and to date have broken 1 front. the first pair i bought i paid $88 an end for, when i replaced my front i paid $35 for the center. At this price i would rather break 2 a year then shell out the big $$$ for 4.88. I also have a spool in the rear and had it setup buy a diff shop, never had a problem with it.

will the 5.29 ring and pinion bolt straight into the standard 3rd member?

Nope :(

The early diffs ( 4.88 and 5.29 ) have thin ring gears so the pinion is set by the housing to suit this. If you bolt the R&P into a later housing the side bearing adjusters will not have enough adjustment. One guy here made a spacer to go between the ring and carrier... YUK.. but it does work.

The best method is to keep the R&P with the original housing, you can move carriers around tho, ie make a 5.29 LSD :)

so the complete 3rd member from a hiace will bolt straight in and i can still use my airlocker

Aftermarket. of course. U.S gear w/solid sleeve

Thats the question we have: Are the after market R&P stronger than the factory, from what youre saying they are ??!!
