I know BJ luvs this sort of sh1t, when the axle snapped (wasn't a clean break) slivers of metal run through the diff chopping up lots of stuff. The rear diff needed a locker end plate and to be re-raced with new bearings, the pinion bearing was also stuffed.

Ouch didnt you do the locker last time you snapped an axle as well?
Did it damage the C&P at all?

Yes, last time there was $300 worth of repairs to the locker. This time it only needed an end plate ($90). The total diff rebuild with parts was $700 last time it was about $1000.
The pinion gear was fine and there were only a couple of chips in the crownwheel thankfully in non contact areas.
Hopefuly now with the front locker the strain will be balanced front to rear and stop this problem otherwise I can get custom axles made up. The Yanks don't seem to break em coz they all run auto's (less shockloading) so I tell em they don't wheel hard enough

Yeah they are 28 spline, 31mm diameter.
The 3.5 V6 are 31 spline, 36mm diameter.
The ring gear is 9" for mine and 10" for the 3.5 V6.
Not pissy axles by any means but I seem to be busting em like matchsticks....................

I think that the main problem is that bloody hilux in front is just too quick and you have to keep on the gas eh!

Actually Baz, when I broke the first one I was following you as well ??
Hmmm and I had the little bloke with me also.
Ok next time we'll try this you take the little bloke and follow me but knowing my luck instead of breaking an axle I'll trash a CV

mister bishi, how hard is it to upgrade to the aforementioned V6 axle and are they expensive?
is teh diff centred? maybe a hilux diff is in order
it is not about brand loyalty, but saving you some $$$ in the long run. Who cares what is underneath and what powers it, so long as the seats are comfy and teh a/c works. or in my case, so long as the seat is sorta comfy and teh door wont fly open

He quoted me $400 to broach and respline my existing side gears to take the bigger axles. But I'm not sure if they will fit in my axle housings, looking at the CAPS programme the hub flange/bearing arrangement looks different, thats not to say they won't fit though.
A set of 2nd hand bigger axles would be around $500 or so, if you can find em.
He quoted me $1000 to make up a set of HD axles complete with hub flanges which he says would be 2-3 times stronger than what I have already. He says they can be twisted a full rotation before they will snap, he makes a lot up for drag racers etc. So that is the go I reckon, he's measuring up my broken one in case I decide to go ahead.
