Which has the stronger CV's??

The pre 89 model front diff with the 9.25" centre or the post 89 model with the 8" high pinion housing???

Can the pre 89 model housing bolt up to a post 89 model spring pack??

Are there any other differences between the 2 models, ie Brake Calipers / Disc Diametre etc

What difference is there between a pre 89 model and the front end out of a 60 series??

60 is wider in the springs and actual track of wheels, pre 90 are all the same ctr, i think all have thesame c/v pre or post.

CV joints in the HZJ are bigger.
Callipers on the HZJ have 4 pistons the same size like the hilux 88-.Rotor siza the same.
Spring packs and U bolts the same.

So if the HZJ CV's are stronger than the HJ:

Would it be possible to make a hybrid front using a HJ housing plus diff centre and HZJ axles/CV's & brakes???

Would that make the stongest possible front end without going to extremes?? (ie Dana etc)

I noticed that the Landcruiser Mountain Park Recovery/compeition HZJ75 was using an earlier HJ front diff & I was wondering why.

CV joints are slightly bigger, compare the second and the third from the left:



90+ brake calipers are much larger and uses the same brake pads used in the 80 series:



1990+ diff housings are stronger and thicker than the round square section 85-87 diff housings. 40 series diff shown but similar to 85-87 75 series diff:



but the 88-89 housings also have a reinforcing gussett that makes it more desirable:



I haven't tried it on an early 75 series diff, but the 90+ CV joints would not fit into a 40 series diff.

I was discussing with 80UTE a year ago about grafting 80 series CVs and swivels on an early 9.25" diff, but the distances between us prevented the project. Now with the advent of 4340 CV joints in the market, the need is probably no longer there.

I wonder how hard it would be to gusset up an early HJ housing similar to a HZJ housing. I suppose the drama then is the CV's are still the older/smaller size.

As you mention, grafting the 80 series swivels onto a HJ housing & then gusseting it up like a HZJ would be the go, but would take alot of fabrication.

I would probably just try to find an 88-89 housing and fit a Haultech or Longfield or Newfield CV joint. Those are most likely stronger than the genuine CV anyway.

This was my thoughts as I was more troubled at the thought of breaking the 8" CW&P than the CV's. If the CV's are upgraded then it is likely to be as strong as the factory HZJ and I would also have the same diff centre in the front & rear as well.
