winch gearbox lubrication

overhauling a ramsey REP8000 winch at the moment, the gearbox was full of very sticky black grease. what is the recommended/ideal lubricant for these? the gearbox does not seal well (read - at all) so it would have to be a grease, but the graphite grase that was in there had gone all hard and filthy, so maybe something lighter? wheel bearing grease?
