Several issues with a 2.8td

Firstly, i try to crank it every morning and it turns over once and i hear a loud "clunk" and it stops turning over.
it sounds like the starter motor is screwed, which isnt that bad. However, when it finally does start, is struggles to get started, it stutters and sometimes dies while trying to get up the revs to idle. If it does manage to start, it will keep stuttering for a while on idle then clear up.
now after driving it for a bit, if i stop at a set of lights it will blow smoke furiously, and when i take off, i cant see the car behind me.
stop at the next set of lights and stuttering comes back and so does the smoke. while its moving, it will run fine.
also i have to top it up with water every day, as its leaking somewhere but i cant find any evidence of a leak, all the hoses seem fine, there is no spilt wated on the floor, oil seems fine so i dont think water is entering the engine.
anyone have any ideas?

i thought of that, but ive filled up the radiator so many times, i must of put in about 20 liters of water, shouldnt the engine not even start with that amount of water in it?

Sounds seriouse!!!!
Get the cylinder head checked!!!!!
They just put a gas analiser on your radiator filler to check for the presence of Co in your cooling system.

Sounds like a busted head ! If you get the head removed and checked, it could be a good thing to check if the block is still level, they can warp a little ...

hmmm if it does turn out to be a cracked head, would it be better to get a 4.2td fitted?
that was in the plans, but not for some years to come.
would it be better to fit one in now? or sell it and buy a 4.2? or just repair the head and what ever else is wrong with it?

Depends on your $$$ situation.. If your happy with 2.8, then fix head.
Will be $5-8k+ for 4.2 donk, 2.8 are worth $0.00, plus runnin gear.
But remove head first. have a look, it maynot be that.

i wouldnt mind spending 5-8k on a 4.2td conversion, im not happy with the 2.8 and ill probably end up taking a loan to pay for all of the repairs.
if its only going to cost about 5-8k to have a conversion, i may end up doing it.
Im taking her to the mechanics on tuesday to have it all checked out, and depending on how much he tells me it is, ill consider doing it.
bogged, would you know any places where i could start asking about conversions around sydney?

Duncan at Maquarie 4x4..
Dont know if Sam Keck at Overkill does anything but zooks, but PM him from here? (OVERKILL ENGINEERING)
West End Diesel, they got MQHOON's Christie Creation going like stink, very good work, and can setup diesels properly.
Give MQHOON a PM, he knows his shit and probably has a ton of spares that may help?
place in 4x4 trader selling TD42's for $4500. Its a start.

well its been confirmed, got a crack over the number 6 piston, leaking water into the exhaust, starter motor is all rusted out, now they are taking the head off to find out where the crack is...
is it worth fixing? how reliable would a weld on the head be?
