Is it worth replacing these or extending them after a body lift? Any one not using them? Does the engine bay get full of crap without them?

i just recently made new 1's and it stops an absolute heap of mud getting into the engine bay. I made mine go a bit further forward and further back than the originals as well.

I got the rubber from clark rubber, the 1 metre wide stuff, 1 meter of it, and i still have half the sheet for where ever else i'm gonna need it. Only cost about $30 i think. The widest strip they had was 300mm which was not wide enough and cost more per metre than the metre wide stuff.

Have to agree with marin. A few years ago i started hearing this flapping noise at speed- turned out to be the right-hand rubber flap com adrift. Just pulled it right off at the time and laziness/busy-ness meant i didn't replace it for ages, which resulted in a filthy engine bay. Amazing how much crap got in there with just some dirt road and beach driving - makes simple jobs like changing a filter a PITA. Ended up replacing it with slightly thicker rubber which took a half-hour with a sharp knife and hole puncher to fit.

Did the same , Cheap as Chips, Just use your old ones as a template and extend it a bit longer.

What they said, just make em 50mm wider so it covers the body lift, definately worth it though, seeing as the Alt is right near the opening on one side!

Yep , do it...... Rubber and cable ties are cheap, and alternators are expensive ....shane.

they don't put them there from factory for the hell of it.....

Definatly seal the engine bay off from the wheel wells the best way you can and it will save a lot of heart ache at the end of the day

How do you measure them up?
Just remove the old ones as a template and add 50mm?
Definately my next job - with the toyo V8 the alternator is quite low and the big belt on the front of the engine is very exposed.

i used 1.5mm with the rope like stuff through it, i.e not pure rubber, was cheaper, but we will wait and see if it holds up to any stick and stuff. I fixed mine with self drilling screws and mud washers along the top, and used the pop in original things along the chassis rail

What you are describing is called "insertion rubber" which is ruber laminated with cotton. Definitely the thing to get since it is much more resistant to tearing and quite cheap. You might like to go somewhere other than Clark rubber for stuff though since their prices are a rip off generally. Try an industrial rubber supplier. I bought 3m of 150cm wide 6mm insertion rubber to make mudflaps out of a few years ago for $50. The 1.5mm stuff should be much cheaper. Try the yellow pages.

it also helps keep the 'air pressure' correct in the engine bay, helpin with cooling
piss easy to fix, goto purple pig and buy some.

allow a little bit for movement of body and chassis etc.. I made my first ones too tight, they ripped.
