Timing belt woes

Hi guys

Replaced my timing belt the other night and the car now has really good low down torque but revs really highly to get to only 80k/hr.

Lined up all the marks as per manual. Noticed when I was taking it off that the mark on the injector pulley was sitting at about 10 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock as per manual moved it and was now wondering if I should move it back. What sort of damage can be done by not having the mark on the injector pulley lined up? What exactly does it do?

Its an 83 LN46 L motor 2.2ltr diesel

obviously you have generated a timing problem (probably with the injection timing) when you changed the belt. you'll need to pull it apart again and put it together with the timing set up correctly. this will probably involve finding out why the timing marks on the pump pulley are out of alignment - it might be that the key that locates the pump pulley on the pump spindle is broken or missing - or it could be that you missed the actual timing marks and lined it up with something else instead. it is a bit tricky to get it right on a 4 cylinder because at TDC the pump is pressurised, and it will very easily flop to one side or the other.

also if you didn't replace the tensioner pulley, replace it when you have it apart - they have a habit of seizing and if you don't catch it quickly (squeals and smoke from front of engine) it will snap the belt and that's pretty much the end of your engine.

good luck!

sound like your pump timing [the mark that was at 10 oclock] is not perfect might be one tooth out giving great low down power but nothing up top.what you might have done is advanced the pump timing . the engine will still run but be wrong .time to pull it apart and double check .it is very easy to make that mistake as the belt should have no slack when it is sitting on the pulleys with the tensioner releasedcall me if you want0415156693 mick can explain it better

OK I put the timing belt back on how it was when I took it off but now it won't even start. The injection must be wrong. It is two teeth out. As I know it starts when the marks line up but doesn't quite run right, I will adjust it off these marks, but which way will I adjust it? Should I take it back one notch to have the mark out only one notch or should I take forward to have the mark one notch too far forward. Any thoughts on which direction would give me the best result?

Sick of pulling the bloody thing apart all the time!!!

I have a Surf 2.4 and this may help with your motor. The injection pump timing on the Surf is also just before 12 o'clock and difficult to get just right because of the spring in the pump.

I set the cam and pump timing marks in correct position and the crank one tooth before the mark then install belt and release the tensioner.I then rotate crank a couple of times and this takes up the slack in the belt between crank and pump and all marks are then aligned.

this is what i did as the first time i put it back in when i released the tenshioner it moved the crank otu by one when it took up slack so the second time i moved it back one tooth and all is good now.
