Borg Warner 3Speed in 77 rangey

hi there my rangey has been modified to auto using a b/w 3speed. Are these boxes OK ratio-wise or do they sap alot of torque in comparison to the stock rangey auto box? thanx.....

From what I have seen the BW boxes work well and sap a lot less power than the torquflite. However if you have the usual conversion you also have most of an LT95 under your rangie as well.

pardon my ignorance but what does that mean? ( the rest being LT95 )

a borg warner 40 is stronger if they can be modified to fit and it just so happens i have a fully rebuilt box to taxi spec (from an xf falcon which is stronger again biger clutches and bands etc if u r interested

They are not a transmission that will take abuse well nor have a go d life span.the are the same tranny as in early falcons with six cylinders not v8's borg warner 35 then 40 in the xe-xf also fitted to datsun bluebirds would be fine for regular driving but loaded on a hill?not so good. are you sure it's not an early ritter conversion using a what's commonly known as a c4 but most likely a c9 although almost identical transmission. if so they are a much more durable box as there whats fitted to v8 falcons of similar era.ratio wise they are fine until large tyres are fitted 33 35 etc and probably won't take the extra strain to well either

I had an XR falcon with the bw35 behind a 289 V8. Did a bit of towing etc and had a good run.

The Borg-Warner conversion was done by Mike Norman at Off Road Automatics in Sydney under licence to Jaguar Rover Australia. As I recall they felt it was fine for the 3.5 V8 but not much more. The C4 was thought to be good up to 5 litres without problems
