My diesel is pinging??

Post by Syzygy »

My 2.4 diesel seems to be pinging much the same as a petrol motor would...

I'm thinking this can't be good for it, and i have no idea whats causing it.

It seems to only happen under load, and once the revs get over about 2300. Its not as loud as a petrol ping, but definately there. I've filled up a few times, once with bp diesel, and it's still the same so its probably not the fuel quality unless its all gone bad.

any ideas?

pinging can be caused by a few things, incorrect inj timing(anyone been playin?) belt/chain worn (many k's?) or pre ignition, will never know can try some fuel cleaners to try knock off carbon deposits.

Diesels can't ping (detonation type ping) if the timing is wrong they will knock or you have a mech problem that is making a pingging sound.

Pinging (pre-ignition) can occur in a petrol engine because the fuel is in the cylinder before the piston reaches the part of the cycle when the spark occurs.

As 80ute said this does not happen in a diesel, fuel is only injected when ignition is wanted. The exception could occur if an injector or the pump is faulty.

hmm, it definately sounds like pinging.

perhaps it is a pump or injector problem...

the only other thing i can think of is some sort of rattle/vibration on the exhaust. Fairly sure it isn't that though

Did it just start pinging or have you gradually noticed it? Its probably not what happened to me but when my timing belt jumped a tooth it was knocking hard, running real rough. May be something to do with the timing belt...
