what year did they start making the defender ? im going to have a look at a '81 landrover, tray, b bar, cd, bfg's, ect'
i cant see someone doing a tray on a rangie and selling for 4300 so i was under the impression it would be a 110 def or lwb S3....? anyone got any clues...anything i should look out for on it?

it will be a stage 1 series 3 fitted with the 4bd1 from factory, unfortunately it's not a 110 but a leaf sprung 109.check for rust in the chassis and firewall as they're the hardest to replace.they are a reliable and tough vehicle and for the price you mentioned it may be allright.

cleanest rover i have ever seen....
parabolics (spare set of army shackles)
tray with canvas canopy
alum roll bar on tray
sliders and front bar similar to heathx4's with the fender bars and all...
am , uhf, cd
spotties front, one rear
dual batt
next to no rust..original paint in better condition in my olds pajero
snorkel
new bfg AT (
)
sals rear diff
overdrive
i might have to put my locking hubs off my IIa on it if im driving it alot
when he started it it was like heaven...big grumbly diesel...got some rock to it when ya shut it down...just about rolled it
just under 400k on it but its had it easy...

if it is a stage one(front looks like a defender) it has the lt95 gearbox/transfer box and is full time 4x4, same as classic rangie's. so don't bother with the fwh's

Sounds like a great truck, especially with the diesel at a good price. There were a few for sale down here but where asking 6 - 9K.
As stated before dont worry about the FWH, i dont think they woulf fit anyway as the outer splines are different.
Dave.

Rear should be 10 spline.
Front will be 10 spline at the diff, 23 at he cv and 24 at the outer.
S2, S2a & S3 were all 10 spline as standard AFAIK but i may be wrong

I assume that was a typo Dave?
Rear axles are 24 spline 1.24" with a bloody huge salisbury diff in the middle.
Front is as Dave mentioned. CV joints are AEU1811, which are as strong as the AEU2522 - the strongest factory LR CV.
In a stock Stage 1 the only things you are likely to break are the front ring and pinion or the 10-spline inners. You can get some 24/23 spline Jac-Mac axles and some 24 spline side gears fairly cheaply to strengthen the front (DAS was selling some 24 spline centres a while back).
I haven't had any problems yet with the 10 spline inners on my 3.9 ISUZU 110 (running 33's), but I have been on trips with mates with Stage 1's who both broke 10 spline fronts on the same hill.
Looks like a good buy. If you look after the motor it should do a million km. Make sure you put the right oil in the LT95 box.
Your IIA FWH won't fit, they will be 10 spline and you need 24. Aside from that you may damage the centre diff driving around in 2wd and you won't save any fuel. It should only use 9-11L/100km anyway. Lose the hyclone.
