Yes it has been done before.
The Magna EFI system has been fitted to a 2.6 Paj and the Triton 2.4 16 valve EFI also is a direct bolt in.
You can find Magna TN-TP wrecks in the trading post for very cheap so grab the manifold, injectors, fuel rail, ECU and all the harness wiring. You should be able to snaffle all that for about $500.
The thing is you have to use the manifold in a rear wheel engine (the Magna is front wheel drive) so some aluminium welding is required to reverse the manifold. If you can do most of the work yourself to keep costs down and with a set of extractors and sports exhaust driving a swb it should go a lot better.
Standard Astron 2.6 Paj = 76Kw & 192Nm
Standard Astron 2 TN/TP 2.6 carby = 83Kw & 195Nm
Standard Astron 2 TM/TP 2.6 EFI Magna = 93Kw & 205Nm
Remember also you will have a Astron 2.6 the Magna's used a Astron 2 2.6 which have a higher compression ratio, hydraulic lifters and larger valves. I would try and snaffle an Astron 2 2.6 EFI motor out of a wrecked Smegma if you can.
The 2.4 conversion gives good results by all accounts but finding one and the cost could make it expensive.
