Chev starter motor problem.

Post by Kev80 »

Does anyone know much about starter motors ?

Im having a problem with the old 350 Chev engine in my ski boat, it realy labours to turn over & doesnt quite get enough revs to kick over even when using my new truck battery from my 80 series.
Cables & connections seem ok.

The thing is that when i take all the spark plugs out it spins over fine.

Is it possiable to have a starter motor fail under load but ok otherwise ?

I cant think what else it could be !

Chev starters have always been crap, go and buy a new gear reduction type starter ~$400 and it will spin over like no tomorrow. Ive had Chev's in 4B'S for 20 years now and always had probs with chev starters untill i used a reduction type from about 10 years ago and have never looked back. :!: :!: :!:

Yep Wally has got it. The Standard Chev Starters are hopeless with a decent engine.

There used to be a company in Aus somewhere that was making the mounting face for a reduction starter. And you just used a Toyota Reduction starter body and solinoid and fitted the supplied drive gear. Was fairly cheap too but cant remember where they came from. Looked just like a Tilton Starter when assembled.

Thanks for the help.

I have heard of reduction starters but never seen one, is it a smaller unit or a reduction in gear size, whats its purpose ? :?

Where is the best place to buy one as its usually cheaper to order things than to buy them here ?

Ruff, the modded starter sounds like a good idea but because its in a boat i dont have much room under the engine to muck around so might not go this way.
