Not much help, but I took mine to a diesel mechanic guy who only dealt with diesels/injectors and pumps. I think they are fairly fragile inside.

In normal maintanace a pump does not require service. Timing can be checked as too full throttle. If any further problems exist, look for a diesel injection specialist.

I think mine (1989 2.8 turbo diesel Hilux) injector pump is in desperate need of a service because
a) when it is cold i've noticed it starts and idles at 700 and then when I drive it, it idles on around 800-900. It doesn't do it when its not a cold morning when its started.. Really weird.
b)hasn't been done since I bought the car however it does have a reciept saying it was serviced in 2000, ie 5 years ago.
c) I'm absolutlly paranoid when it comes to my cars, i'm a uni student and have NOOO money to fix anything if it breaks.. so always shitting it when I hear weird rattles of the car does something wierd aswell
Wot you guys think?? sorry If I hijacked your post

Im no expert but when its cold its not going to run correctly until its fully warmed up anyway, so this may be the cause of that, and i only think the injector pump would need a service if its actually leaking fuel, not if its just running a bit off.
