how well can a square driveshaft be balanced?

What materials are you using?
If it's really crude like mine you'll use 40mm SHS inside 50mmSHS each with prob 4mm wall. This is unbalanceable. As I only run this on the front it's not too much of an issue. However, every now and again a locking hub will not disengage and by the time you get to say 80km/h it feels like the whole car is about to fall arpart due to the vibes. Good for a cheap thrill but not much else.
If you want a balanced square shaft then source one from a tractor parts store as they have a range of different shapes for their PTO outputs and square is one. I'd imagine that these would have tighter tollerences. Or ring Hardy Spicer and they should be able to sort you out. Although I had one bloke there telling me that it was impossible that my hilux shaft didn't have enough travel in the slip yoke
(Slip measures about 120mm from my calcs)

i was planning on using SHS, but if they vibrate that bad i may need to look at pto stuff.
the reason i want it balanced is i do beach trips occasionally and it would be a PITA locking and unlocking the hubs when i come to a cutting

I thought people were using square drive shafts casue they could make them in the back shed for cheap. If you are going to go buy one then aren't you better off getting a round one which is stronger with a long slip joint and be able to run at 100km in 4WD ?

yeah i was only going to use a sgquare one because they are cheap and have long travel, i will find out prices on tractor slip joint and custom long travel shafts and if there isnt much difference i will go for the custom made shaft.

I think that you'll still find it cheaper but it is worth investigating. The difference is that you are still buying the parts and using your own labour as opposed to getting a shop to do it. Tell us what you find out!

i priced a custom long slip shaft today and it is about $600.
i read on the board here i while ago the tractor pto shaft was around $100 a metre for female $200 a metre for male.
might see if i can find a shaft of a slasher or somethin that i could use

I can get you a set up like this for $140 if you want.
Its 10" spline with a 3.25" collar
This is a stock hilux spline beside it.

I think you will find the PTO shafts you are talking about are the 4-6 spline style. Fine spline shafts i have not been able to find at longer lengths than 10".

sounds good tony, i will get back to you about that, will probly be a couple of weeks before i get around to doin it
