Engine Exchange

Hi,

I run a NJ with the DOHC 3.5, but sadly it has developed a case of the dreaded tappet knock.

I have run through the usual process of trying to clear it without any real success although it seems to reduce in impact once I get a few revs up, almost disappearing when I hit 3,000 rpm.

I have nearly 280,000km on the clock now so a simple replace the tappets job is unlikely to be worthwhile ($500+ for the tappets plus the gaskets plus the $500 worth of man-hours if I choose not to do it myself) as it will need the cam belt changing soon enough and its life beyond that cannot be guaranteed.

I would prefer to get a different engine as well. The DOHC is a great open road engine, but it isn’t the best thing on a gnarly trail nor when towing my camper, so I am looking for alternative power sources and for advice on something that will fit and do a better job.

How easily will the SOHC from the NL fit?

What chance do I have of easily slotting in a DiD under my bonnet?

How about any other late model turbo diesel?

Are there any GOOD engine exchange providers around?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

G'day. you may find that the noise may not be the lifters. The DOHC 3.5's have a variable secondary butterfly setup. If u take the engine cover off you will see a vacuum diaphram on the front of the manifold, disconnect the vacuum line and see if the noise stops. If it does the push rod from the diaphram can be adjusted. At the bottom of the rod is a piviot for the butterfly shaft, it has an 8mm nut and a small allen key will be needed. It's very fiddly but it can be done. If u can get to it just make sure you dont turn it too far. I hope that can save you a bit of money
