Air Filters... Again

Hey guys

I was reading over all the intake topics and I am still not sure what is the best option. Currently I have the original filter box and paper filter with the black box.

I was considering a MRT or K&N ram pod filter but I then heard they don't filter as well as the paper filters.

Anyway, I wanted more low down torque when off road, but I don't want to risk injesting dust. Is it worth going for a pod or would a different drop in filter be best?

Do the pod filters give that much of a noticable/usable power increase down low or do I stick with the original maze of pipes?

You can actually get a sponge type drop in filter that fits your existing airbox. I think the company's name is uni filter for memory. I think they're around $70.00. I'd probably go with that option for the moment as you don't have to worry bout making up any ducting or tubing to fit a K&N Pod. I also believe that K&N make a drop in replacment too, but its real pricy.

You won't get massive gains with a filter change- it will barely be noticeable. Plus most of the gains will be top end power.

I've tried a few different set ups with my K&N pod and it felt to lose torque with one of those extra bits of inlet tubing removed. I haven't tried removing the black resonant chamber on top of the engine- but going by the service manual you would lose a lot of torque.

I run a K&N pod on road and refit the standard canister with a paper element for off road use. Get a drop in filter if you want to use something off road, otherwise you run the real risk of ingesting water.

You can't beat a pod filter unless you have a snorkle with a finer filter. I have had both. I prefered the pod all round. Induction noise is very nice and it has a little more top end power. You notice more and will be better off when/if you have a high perf cat and 2" exhaust and extractors. No point having super air induction if it can't be expelled sufficiently. I had my pod first though and I still enjoyed it. You will save money on sh*tty paper filters too. Mine passed rego with the pod on no drama's, I guess it was because it isn't a hardcore upgrade. I will be getting a pod on the 80 when I get turboed.

I ran an MRT pod filter for years. What a pain in the ass that was! Had to clean an reoil after every single trip, it sucks up so much dust.

Also, after a while the oil pools to the bottom of the filter then drips off making a mess of the engine bay.

I now run a cheap pod (paper) from Supercheap, stays clean easier, very easy to clean (bit of solution, bit of air...all good) and never had an issue.

I suspect my MRT Pod was one of the reasons my engine gave up the ghost and needed a $2600 rebuild...will never run one of them again.

Well Im glad I asked cos I was looking at the MRT pod.

I suspectd as much that a different drop in filter wouldn't do much.

About the black box, my vehicle didn't come with one, but when i got hold of one I found it improved the power in the middle rev range but lost a lot of power below 2000rpm. I disconnected the black box last night and put the old setup in and I found it was really responsive in the low revs.

I really shot up my steep drive!

The blackbox helps bump up the torque between 2500rpm and 3500rpm.

Have you got a pic of your set up without the black box? Do you need different inlet pipes to set it up that way- or is it simply a matter of rearranging the existing ones?

Hmmm....might have to try mine without the black box and see what difference that makes, sub 2000rpm mine just pain sucks on the road.

i did this for a while. If you open the filter box, you will see the if you leave the back cover off, the air still has to go through the filter. Standard paper filter from wherever, and you should hear the induction noise on full throttle  awesome

Then bought a pod from somewhere, and apart from mucken around with plumbing, I enjoyed that.

I run A Group N unifilter airfilter on my feroza. It replaces the standard paper filter.

he he.. this is the first thing i did after getting the feroza... look for a way to open up the induction. Removing the "lid" off the air filter canister did teh trick... its amplifies it like a trumpet. All i have to do now is streamline the plumbing by removing such things as resonators to make the engine sound even better.... (i got bitten by the intake bug after removing the resonator from my charade )

Go on... everyone try it!
go outside right now... remove your air box "lid" and take the fez for a spin round the block... dont forget to floor it and let it rev right up into the 4000-5500 range... you'll love it! :D...

sound really starts to kick in at about 4200rpm ;)

Removing the black box did help that sluggishness below 2000rpm but I don't get that kick I would get when I past 3000rpm with the black box... humm, what a bummer.

I would tend to stick with the black box on road and go back to the original pre black box setup when off roading. It all depends if I can be stuffed changing things.

Ill post a pic of the original setup later today after i get some sleep  (it just uses some long pipe with a slight bend in it from stock)

My homemade pod type with heat shield using finer filter. I used a second layer over the pod for offroad use to improve the filtration.

Cost about $25 all up.

Power gain was'nt breakneck, but it sounded  .
