V8 coversion for Bundera

Hi my bundy has a blown 2.4 litre petrol engine and I was thinking of buying "Marks adapter kit" to convert to Carbie 4.2 or 5.0 Holden V8.

Just would like to know as much information as possible.

Is it worth converting to a V8 or should I just get another reco 22r for $2,500?"

My gearbox is a G52 so its not as strong as the Dyna gearbox.
Would the G52 gearbox be strong enough for a stock V8?

Is the conversion hard?

What would be required for the engineer certificate and how much would it cost?

I think all the Marks adapters should cost no more then $1500.

How much would it cost to convert to a V8 including cost of labour and the engine.

My budget is around 3-4 grand.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Aaron

The engineer certificate would depend on which state you are in.

EFI Bundera who used to be on here did the commodore V8 into his. Invovled firewall mods and sh!t. Was a very nice truck! This is why I went with the v6 for mine.

I decided not to do a v6 conversion and or a v8 efi conversion because too much fiddling around with efi and more dollars.

I live in Melbourne

Please let me know of your input to the above topic only!

You will need a same year or newer motor than the build year of your car and all applicable emmisions control equipment, so I think that will pretty much rule out a 4.2. That would mean a VL V8, not really the best 308 holden produced.

You will need an engineers certificate for sure, so factor in $5-700 there too.

I wouldn't trust the stock gearbox with either eight. why spend good money on a clutch/adapter etc and then spit a gearbox.

Personally I would run a 3.8 V6 with a T700R4 auto. This will improve drivability and the auto will soften off the hits you can put into your transfer and diffs. The 3.8 does more power and torque than the 4.2 and probably matches or betters a VL 308 too. Easier to fit and cool too.

Don't be afraid of EFI, it's not that big a deal and you will love the reliability and stable idle etc- every holden has been EFI since '88 now so we're not really talking new school. It will the easiest way to make the car legal and have a reliable package.

I wouldn't listen to anyone who says go straight gas either - more $$$ for less hp, reliability and range in a SWB car.

With all the adaptors available and factory bits there's a ton of options.

I'd investigate the 3.8 V6 option- but buy the Mark's bell to adapt to the bigger boxed Bundy (the 2.4 TD Bundy had stronger g/box) and figure another $1000 for the stronger tranny (it's all bolt in).

Another simple kind of option is source the 2.7 Hilux petrol motor (109kW, 235Nm). Your g52 would survive this.

A few more $$ than you have would get you the 4.0L Lexus V8 (185kW, 400Nm). Dellows make adaptor to either Bundy transmission.

If you can't get the engine rebuilt for under $1500 let me know as I rebuilt a 22R with reground cam for $700-$800. It does go hard now.

the t/diesel bundy g/box will handle the power of a stock v8 but not if you thrash it ,i have a g/box cheap if interested .you would be better off going for a v6 auto much more economical but cost @4-5 grand
the v8 will fit nice cost will be @2-3 grand

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my RJ70 Bundera and I will be going with a supercahrged V6 and Auto (not decided on t700 or 4l60e yet) This will give you 165KW and 370 nM of torque. Plenty of power and low down grunt to get you almost anywhere

I'm hoping to pick up a wrecked VS Commodore for around th 3-4K mark. Even less depending on how rooted it is.

I have done a little bit of searching on this forum for posts made by other bundy owners and came across this thread by BUNDERA. It has pretty much convinced me to go with an import engine. There are no pics anymore but I'm sure BUNDERA and SKIP could post up a couple of their build-up pics again.

I looked around for one of these when I started mine. I found the extra $s not worth the hassle. You can always do a CRS blower later on for $1800. I already have had some 'spacers' made that would make some beefy turbo manifolds :D

Pity you will have to change your name so soon! :finger: I think I would have some pictures of these trucks on my 'puter somewhere. If you want me to email them send me a PM with your email if you like.

These engines were good because they have stronger internals- but like you said considering how hard they are to source it hardly seems worth the effort.
Been thinking too that the SC V6's were auto only (meaning 4l60e) so that makes the conversion as difficult to wire as the Lexus motor.

Yeah they were only Auto int the VS Calais but you could always sell or swap it for a T700 and not have to worry about the wireing for the electronic transmission
