patrol dash lights going bonkas

ok
i park the car last night, no dash lights illunimated (nothing out of the ordinary)
i get in this morning, turn it on and the there are 4 lights on the dash and the battery has dropped from 13.9 vlts to 11 and wont charge up to 13.9 after motor is fired.
the dash lights are
brake/ a/t oil temp / battery and down the bottom under the km counter is the orange 'earth' symble.
i drive it 40km, the volts slowly climb, but dont get over 12v
i have an auxiliary auto trans oil temp guage which indicates that the auto oil is not out of the ordinary.
the brake light illuminates when you pull on the handbrake, or the pads are low and the indicator hits the rotor. (i changed the pads 3 months ago)
im thinking there is nothing wrong with my auto or brakes but the warning lights have come on by default because the alternator has had it or the battery isn't holding a charge.
or there could be a slow leak
anyone have similar dramas ?
this is a tb42e motor on gas.
im going to get busy now with the volt meter and see if i can suss it out, but im pissed.
