URGENT water damage!!!

Ok i REALLY need some help here.

I went for a wheel today in my 2000 gu patrol 3.0 turbo diesel. it is auto. I went through a pretty solid water/mud hole and half way through there were huge ruts under water and my wheels fell in and my chassis was sitting on the mud and i got real stuck real quick.
My mate couldnt snatch me out from behind and couldnt get past so had to go back and around to snatch from the front which took a while. After he snatched me out from the front i started my car fine etc etc.
But once i started driving i started experiencing problems.
The car was very sluggish. I put my foot flat and it felt as if i was something was holding it back. It was so bad that once i was on the highway i could hardly get to 100 kph. And it was sitting on about 3200 rpm. But when i took overdrive off the revs dropped slightly to 3000...?
Really confusing. something really wrong.
The whole way home the temp guage did not move. However briefly after getting out of the water hole i notice the little orange "engine" light came on. i stopped to try find out what it was, when i restarted the car it was gone and did not come back on.

Anything any one can tell me about water damage that could of occured. I am really really worried.

You have checked your air filter? It may me clogged with shyte preventing it from breathing?
Did you check all the basics? Even dried mud in the exhaust?

*From the sounds of it you turned the motor off when you where in the water????
If you did water may have gone up the exhaust........And your car has a cat that the water/mud may have stuff blocking the exhaust to some extent and causing it to labour????

Depending on height of water you were stuck in???

*If it was over the axles you may well have water in them...
fix - drop the oil and put new oil in

*If it was higher than the side steps good chance it has made it's way into the gearbox.....
fix - drop the oil and put new oil in

I figured out pretty early on in my 4x4 learning that water = BAD and only drive through it if you really have to......If you can drive around it no matter what people say....don't get suckered into trying to drive through cause it almost always ends badly or causes undue repairs down the track...

You got a snorkel ?

Do a complete oil change after something like this. Including gearbox and transfer. Sounds like you have water in the gearbox that has thinned out the oil hence the engine is working hard to get the same speed cause the torque converter isn't stalling at the same rev's as it used to. Stall speed is when the gearbox and engine are spinning at roughly the same speed.

i dont know about cars but on bikes if u drown ur bike or something like that simular stuff happens. on a bike check ur oil and if it isnt black (it goes like a milky colour that means water in there) drain it straight away and put new oil in then start it and run for a minute or 2 and then change the oil again do this a few more times and then in most casses they survive. i dont know much about cars i was just givin a sugestion i would just check the oil to see if there is any water in the engine at all. if there isnt i dont know wat it could be, dunno if this can help at all. dont know if bikes are at all the same. ok good luck with it.

I'm fairly sure they are drive by wire accelerators, probably the computer near the right foot got wet....then acc wont werk properley.
hopefully it will all come good when propereley dried, if not, then get it dried out properley. Main ecu may be high enough to be still dry, with luck. Have seen this happen twice with 3.0 litre turbo deisels

Stab in the dark. Air flow regulator.

good stab in the dark.. ive seen it happen too many times...perfect air flow sensor symptoms

had a similar problem with my prado after a filling up with badly contaminated fuel, ended up being the oxygen sensor but the 4b hadn't been through the water,

if it is the air flow regulator what do i need to do?

It was up to the step on the rear and on the left hand side the bottoms of the doors were under. The axles were under front and rear and most likely the gearbox to.
The front was sorta sticking up a little, the bottom of the bumper bar was clear by about a foot.
So i change all my oil. How do i go about cleaning out exhaust?
I will change diff, transger and gear oil today.

And i "think" (didnt really check) that my fillerwas out of the water, as my driver side steps and doors were high and dry above water level.

isnt a torque converter sealed?

air flow sensors $1200ish.. you would hope not.

oh sh!t f*%k crap... better not be air flow sensor.

Hmmm ... I'd say if it's ONLY the airflow meter, then you probably should be pretty happy with that.

I vote junk in the airfilter that's why it will go all sluggish on the hwy.

Personally, I'd say transmission got a drink. It sounds like box is "slipping" hence the higher revs but less actual speed.

i vote for air intake. I had a similar problem the other day and the air inlet tuning between my snorkel and air cleaner was blocked. It is easier to check your air cleaner and air intake than any of the other things.

Sounds to me like its the ECU or trans computer running in limp mode after your dunking. Have you tried reseting both computers??
Seeing as the check engine light came up briefly, i would be 99% sure this is your problem.
You may need to get it pluged in for diagnostics at a dealer a good mechanic.

Judging by everyone's advice you might as well get a new 4x4. :D

Id put $10 on the air filter or exaust being blocked. If your gearbox oil got emulsified that bad it would have shit itself by now. Same as the engine oil or diffs.

Just take your battery terminals off, turn the ignition key right round to start for a couple of seconds, then off again, go have a coffee, then put the terminals back on.
Limp mode is designed to get the vehicle out of trouble and to the work shop. There will be nothing wrong with the computers, they are just running in safty mode due to an error that occoured, possibly a spike, or a minor short, or a sensor that gave a false reading while under water.
If that sensor is still buggered, it won't reset, but chances are it will have dried out and once reset everything will run fine.

... limp home mode is limited to 40-50kph I thought.

being a 28 - 30k 4WD, thats not exactly an option at the present time.

Thanks all for your help, it is really appreciated, im so worried about my car...

So does everyone think dieselboy's method is worth a try?
I will also check air filter etc etc.

Resetting the computer wont hurt, but why not just take to a nissan dealer adn ask them to FIND the issue not FIX it.
they will plug a computer into it, adn tell you whats wrong within 30 mins. You could spend mths lookin

10 mins to reset the ECU, then if that don't work, rip her in to the Dealer!!!!

ok, i will try that then.

but theres something something else i just noticed this morning when starting it. when it park, it seems to rev higher than usual, but as soon as i put it in reverse it dropped back to normal again. then when i put it back in park, the revs went back up.

if that helps at all.

but yeah, im going to take it in and find out what is really wrong with it. thanks for all your opinions on the matter.
