2.8d Hilux cold morning hard starting

Hi Forumites,
Long time watcher, first time poster. Recently each morning I have noticed my 1996 2.8d Hilux is getting harder to start. I have just replaced the crank battery (yesterday) and thought that would solve any starting issues. However, this morning (with a brand new battery), the rig refused to start on the first attempt. On the second turn of the key, the donk fired into life. In both instances I waited until the glow plug light had extinguished.
The engine oil is approximately 4100kms into its 5000km service life. Oh, I live in Melbourne so the mornings aren't THAT cold.
Do you have any suggestions as to why I'm having the starting issue? In the afternoons the rig will fire into life after only one or two turns of the crank (i.e. immediately).
Could it be my glow plugs are due for replacement? If so how much $?
Other issues I may not be aware of?
Any advice on this matter would be awsome. Cheers Bogged Again.
