stock dana 44 axles vs. longfields = I NEED LONGS

upgraded with $1000 US of parts then id take Dana 44s. Remember if you spit a cap and it takes out your balljoints your whole outer assembly completely falls off if you keep trying to drive.

BUT

looks sweet, and at the right price its something i'd definitely consider, cause without longs the toyota axle isnt much chop either

i'd hazard a guess you can make any width sam? OR only just wider than a hilux?

also the Dana axle will steer a lot sharper than the Toyota, so there are some benefits AFTER the CTM and WARN axle upgrade ;)

Hey BJ the 60 would be a better conversion but these are going on our other buggy so the 44 will be strong enough the width will be the same as a dana 44 which is wider than the hilux by about 100mm.With CTM's they would be stronger than the Long's in my opinion.I know some people will disagree but time will tell.
When we get a 60 we will be doing that conversion as well.

We will see how it goes it won't way much more than mine so it may not need them. We will be building one to test in a Hilux so that will be the best test. :lol:

Sam used to be able to snap stock Ujoints within minutes of fitting them with a front locker with his old set up of D44s and around 80-1 final.

We drove his rig less than 20 meters with a new pair of Ujoints and bound it up in rocks and snapped one just above idle.

I have bound up my longs on many more than one occation and have not broken one yet.

Sam has a lot more weight and power than my or our other buggy. I Have given mine a hard time and not broken one but time will tell and if I do then I will look at using the ctm's or something as strong.

So you are running stock joints too are you?
Have you broken any yet?

What are you guys doing for axles. Are you finding them at the right length or cutting and re-splining and if so how are they standing up to the re-spline?
And how are you getting the 6 stud Toy pattern on the end?
What brakes?

My buggy runs standard unis and standard axles which have been cut and resplined.
To date I have not broken any unis. I broke an axle at the diff end during the week but it waqs more my fault than the axle as the axle was floating to much and ended up having only about 10mm of spline in the side gear.
The hilux conversion will run standard axles without resplining.

Also Ruff I havn't done enough driving in my buggy to say they are unbreakable nothing is but I would definately have broken numerous CV's by now.

Cool where have you got the axle seals fitted. At the ends of the tube or up close to the centre? And how are you going to fit them in the stock Toyota housing?

My seals are up at the centre end same as a dana.
The lux one will be up there as well.We still have some issues to sort out but I can't see them being to big a hurdle.It will run Lux hubs and brakes.

I agree CTMS and alloys would be above the strneght of longs and alloys. BUT i honestly dont know

Awesome work Sam!

I think its COOL 8) someone is trying something different.

A lot of what we see of D44's is from the states, and what i can make out is that a stock D44/TOY Hybrid will handle 36's on a normal weight Toyota, if they put bigger meats on then they usually upgrade to CTMs and custom alloys.

So i would imagine for a light weight BUGGY with 40inch MTR's the CTM's and custom axles would be plenty! Also for the average guy running 35's on a TOY then it would be a deffenate improvement over stock CV's.

We won't really know how the strength compares to LONGs until someone wheels this set-up!

Also the more D44/Toy conversions Sam does it just makes it a lot easier for when i want to do a D60/TOY!!! :D

The 44's are easy to come across so the conversion is cheaper. The 60 conversion will be very costly and I don't think many people would buy them where thee 44 conversion will suit a lot more budjets.
