Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I own a 97 disco and a 97 defender with minor mods. Both of my vechicles seem to chew out wheel bearing continuously for no apparent reasons, has anyone had similar problems or be able to shed some light on the subject for me. Thanks.

What size tyes and offset rims are you running?
Normally they wear due to lack of maitenence etc.
If you check everynow and again and tighten, they seem to be fine.

I'm running 32'' tyres on both vechicles with standard offset rims the vechicles are serviced every 5k but the bearings are going in between services the bearings are checked at every service because of this problem. The vechicles do a ratio of 60% offroard to 40% onroad, do you think this may have an affect on the bearings

i would be getting my vehicle serviced elsewhere if the mechanic you use cannot sort the problem out...

my initial thoughts would be that they are overtightening them..

another thing to consider is to run oil in the bearings as apposed to the grease that LR recommend... but even still, you should not be going through bearings at that rate...

Sh@t, my 81' Rangie that i have never touched the bearings in 10 years has never destroyed a set yet !

they must be overtighterning them.

I would suggest making it so that the oil from the diff and swivel housings are lubricating them.

The defender and disco have a different hub to the RR's. the bearings are much closer together which means they are effected by heat more as they so close together.

I had second hand disco hubs ones in the rear of my RR for 10 000kms and no problems, I did make sure that the oil seal wasn't there (in the back of the stub axle) so that they were lubed in oil.

You will probably find your stub axles are damaged where the hub seal seats. The single lip seals let water in easy enough when in good condition, let alone when chewed up by a crappy stub axle.

As said before pull the inner seals out and swap to double lip hub seals.
And either get new stub axles or speedy sleeve them.

Chewing out wheel bearings- not good

Like many suggested here, may be time to look at another workshop to have your servicing done. I've had 4 Rangies and never had to replace wheel berarings. I do try to check them every few months or so hence why I've never had any issues at all I guess
