hi, my name's callum and i live in edinburgh (scotland)
i primarily own a land rover, but i suppose i also own a trooper (jackaroo i think you know them as) which is a bit of a wreck, but donating its engine to my land rover.
to help with this conversion, i'm looking for a wiring diagram for the trooper. it's an '89 2.8td. unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much literature on these vehicles. i've seen various manuals, but they're all for petrol engines. i've also checked ebay for folk flogging cd's with manuals on them, but was dismayed to find these, similarly, only covered petrols.
do any workshop manuals exist for the diesel, either in paper or electronic format? i have the manual for the engine itself ...http://www.bmhor.org/isuzu4j.html but it doesn't really tell me much about wiring.
i reckon i could probably walk into an isuzu dealer with a wheelbarrow full of money to get a manual, but i'd rather avoid shelling out loads of cash just for a wiring diagram. the vehicle itself only cost me £100, AU$ 240.

do they cover the 1st generation trooper at all, as that's what i have.

tdi's are only stock on newer landies, mine is 1987
engine i have has no turbo, its a bit older then the tdi's and they tend to explode when mated to a turbo.
tdi engines are very expensive and troopers rust here quite quickly so they can be picked up cheap, mine cost me about US$180.
the 4jb1 engine is much better than the landrover ones, much smoother, more economical and when i mate my interooler to it and do a bit of pump tweaking it should be abit more powerful than the land rover tdi. Also, 200000 miles is about the max for a landie tdi, isuzus can go much more than that, not that i do much mileage myself.
i had a brief drive about in the trooper when i got it, i really liked it. the engine was quie powerful, certainly much more powerful than the land rover one, so it got fairly fast on country roads. the car was also quite nice too, shme it was rusted beyond repair. ikeep my eyes open for other cheap troopers incase i see one thats not rusty. i'd quite like short wheelbase one.
i've not downloaded those manuals yet, been a bit busy working, shall do it tomorrow. main thing is wiring in (and finding) the glow plug relay so i dont overheat it. i think ther's also a fe other things need wired up in the engine. there seemed to be a sensor thing infront of the radiator and i think the fuel filter housing needs wired, up too. there's other little things like the temperature gauge and oil temperature gauge, but i think these will be shown in the 4jb1 manual.
anyone know of anything else that requires wiring up on a 4jb1-t?

Hi Callum, I am about to carry out the same conversion as you, but with the difference that i will be using the stock isuzu g.box and t.case. I have already seen your posts on landrovernet.com, and everything seems to be fine. Any hints would be appreciated as I am supposed to start work on it in July, after my exams.
Apart from changing the engine, I will also be shortening my 109 to a 100 inch, and use discovery coil axles. It should be quite capable for offroading I think!!

Vehicles with Euro III diesel engines can be drived there. Non Euro III diesel engines have to aprove some test for be driven. And what about converted vehicles ??...
In chile is still not so hard emission laws as in Europe.....(hope to be more clear this time...)

My motor vehicle has a diesel engine, how are diesel driven vehicles tested for exhaust emissions?
The exhaust emissions of diesel driven motor vehicles manufactured before 31st July 1979 are tested visually for smoke opacity only. This means that if dense blue smoke or clearly visible black smoke is emitted during acceleration or for a period of five seconds at idle, the vehicle will fail the test. Vehicles manufactured after 1979 are tested for emissions with equipment are also subject to visual failure.
However, a vehicle first registered after 1st August 1979 is meter tested. It is important to have your vehicle regularly serviced and that when you arrive at your testing station the engine is at its normal operating temperature. Before the test is started a check is made to ascertain that the fuel governor is functioning correctly.
My motor vehicle has a petrol engine. What type of test does it get during a VRT?
If the vehicle was manufactured between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1986 and it is not controlled by an advanced emission controlled system, the vehicle is tested at natural idle speed of 800rpm only for Carbon monoxide (CO). The limit is 4.5%Vol.
If vehicle was manufactured after 1st August 1986 and it is not controlled by an advanced emission controlled system, the test is as above but the limit is reduced to 3.5%vol. Vehicles controlled by an advanced emissions controlled system must pass both a high idle test of 2500rpm-3000rpm testing CO to a limit of 0.3%vol, a Lambda to 1 ± 0.03 and normal idle test of 800rpm testing only CO at 0.5%vol.
My series 3 will be tested in june, for the second time. Until then it would not have the engine swap yet, so we'll see if its original 2.3 diesel will pass.

In Australia there is a general rule that a replacement engines must be the same year or newer than the vehicle they are going in to. Emissions testing is only done (in most states) on petrol vehicles (or very new diesels).
