sounds like it would turn out a bit funny, could be costy and time consuming to get the sides to all line up again. build a new one nice and short, and keep your current one for when u wanna cart stuff..
or maybe u could get a tray off a dualcab thats already got the sides build for it and stuff.

If your going to run IFS rears and extended shackles either bob the tray after you do this or allow for the shackles sticking out when you shorten it. I bobbed mine as short as possible and now the shackles stick out so i need to modify it now.

Do it - its too easy.
You dont need to spend $ on anything besides cutting wheels for your grinder.
Cutting down your tray is good cheap fun.

got a d/cab hilux that i cut 600mm out of the middle of the tray that way i could keep the rear of the tray looking std with light mounts etc.
cut same amount out of side boards and welded back together. wasn't hard to get it all to line up and find i rarely have side boards on anyway.

Doesnt sound qw bad as having to drive with a broken tie rod end thats been tie wired together
At least if the tape breaks you can still steer
The tie wire did break a few times....so we just added more and more
