Hi i was reading 4wd monthly and someone wrote in that there Nissan Snorkel always leaked...

How do i test if my snorkel leaks... i'm paranoid now

any ideas

its for an 04 model Gu patrol

Take the snorkel head off so that it is now a bare pipe. Then block off the pipe. If this kills the engine, your snorkel is sealed (sealed well enough anyway).

Also listen for sucking noises at the connections when you are doing this.

its for an 04 model Gu patrol

they mentioned this at club meeting tonight. Its the "GENUINE NISSAN" ones, bought as an accessory (work that out)... The dude in the article tried 2-3 different ones.. they all leaked, and not just from the seams.

I have a Genuine nissan accessory one on my Hilux (who would have known the GU snork is an almost perfect fit on a first gen hilux)

The mouldings seem to be quite good ..

toyotas genuine snorkel is only classified for dust purposes and its not meant to be used in a water crossing

its in the fine print and you find that out after you do a water crossing n drown the motor and try to go back claiming warranty when the snorkel failed

GQ snorkels, with all their joins, seem to leak too, but the snorkel part is OK. As`already stated, block off the airflow and it should stop running. We did this once afrter a GQ had a drink in a river and found that all the joins sucked in air under the engine bay. The owner believed the snorkel to be operational, but as he found out, if it sucked in air, the river water was sucked in also.

my TJM Airtek snorkel leaks live a sieve. its almost caused hydrolock in my 2.8 several times. i don't trust it at all.

I have a homemade pvc snorkle on a desiel mq, it when blocked off, does not leak, it acully nearly collapses the top of the air cleaner

i used a bit of salastic (spelling), in every flexible pipe join. And that seems to be doing the trick

I even glued a gearbox mount together with the salastic and managed to get another 3months out of it

Mines all one piece

doesnt anyone know if you can fit safari snorkel to a nissan template whole.

If it's one piece, I would try to suffocate the snorkel with a plastic bag.

Doubt it, nissan snorkel hole it too far forward on the panel, me thinks.

just get an exaust place to bend one up... should be water tight

well if nissan cant sort it out and make certain that its air tight because i've already gone through a filer and havnt done much 4wding at all....

i'm going to ask for a new panel and get a safari one fitted fuck this for joke

be careful what ever you put on top of the hole cause being a diesel it will suck it straight leaks or not (NOT YOUR HAND)

I would not be blaming the product i would be blaming the installer first they prob havent sealed it rite int he first place thinking that you wont be takin it of road anyway

I fit about 2-3 snorkels a week T.J.M and Sarfari also including genuine snorkels (made by T.J.M anyway) and never had one leak on me yet

I know of quite a few genuine Nissan (Airtec) snorkels which are prone to leaking. That's why I opted for my second Safari. Seems to be OK after 3 Jardine River crossings.

another thing to with silicone make sure its air sensor safe
on the models runnin the air sensors ,of course

Also you have to leave the silicone to go off before you do a serious leak test,
I have seen the airtek's suck in the snorkle sides and not fully return to shape after.

I fitted a Nissan one today and it was utter cack! How can they expect it to seal when the joints are one piece of plastic pipe slid inside another? You cant tighten the hose clamp down tightly because its all rigid plastic I would guarantee the one I fitted today would not be watertight! It was also a shit fit and the template was toss!

Ive fitted dozens of Safari snorkels and whilst they are not always perfectly designed they are 100 times better than the Nissan one!

a: It was a customer supplied snorkel
b: not my choice to tell him or not
c: its not the type of car to EVER go more than puddle deep in water, never mind be submerged enough to worry about it!

The simplest way to check if there are any air leaks is to beg borrow or steal a can of "aerostart" or "start ya bastard" and spray around any suspect joins. If the engine revs rise at all then that is the seam to look at 1st.

Says you but what if he/she goes to take it offroad through a puddle and they suck water then it will come back onto you and your company you work for ......

Have not a prob with the genuine ones even if the clamp does up tight there should be enough silicone to fill up any gaps that are left [/quote]

I used self amalgamating rubber tape on the joins.. will let me get it apart again if need be, Is alos somewhat re-usable
