I have a 89 sierra with 2"King Springs and Hilux shocks. I have put in 1" extended shackles and have removed a leaf from the front spring packs. I have been told to get more travel out of my extisting setup I need to open up the spring clamps. Is this safe? Do I have any other options that wont break the bank?

yes it's safe. Just open them up but don't take them off. Also you can try and take them apart and coat them with spring grease

Chris may have a photo of my rear spring from AT04 that bent on VIC range. If it was not for the spring clamp the spring would have left the car undrivable.
Basically the spring bent up to the clamp, the rest was fine.
Travel is not everything, stability and reliability is.
Have you looked at RUF? or even running rubber bushes instead or urethane?

Also, undo top shock mount, jack up side of car till spring is fully drooped, then check if shocker is long enuff, or mounted in best place.
On mine, I gained a heap more droop, by lowering the top shock mount by 12 - 15mm. I just put a spacer under the shock mount.
Now spring opens up fully. Zook ain't heavy enough to compress my shock all the up.

What's the easiest way to open the clamps?

I just hammered a screwdriver to lift them enuff to get the pliers on and just bent em up a little.....just loose, imho, so they still do whatever they designed to do, but are less restrictive.
