Power Steering

Hello all.

I have a wee problem with my power steering. When I turn corners the wheel gets really heavy then half way through the turn the steering comes good again, then it'll get heavy again. Its almost as if the power steering pump is only intermittantly pumping. I've topped up the fluid level but it didn't change anything.

Could this be due to old oil. Should I change the oil? Will that fix the problem or does it sound like the pump has shat itself?

Cheers.

Could need bleeding Dave. IIRC to bleed them you keep on turning lock to lock slowly and do it a few times (ten times??) That's supposed to get all the air out- Gregory's manuals usually have the procedure in them.

Would have replied sooner, but have been out test driving vehicles......

Hopefully that will fix the problem. Also check the pulley on the front of the pump hasn't worked it's way loose. The centre bolt on mine came loose and it stuffed the pulley centre (from wobbling around) and was spitting the belt off intermittently. It gets exciting when you lose power steering halfway around a corner!

I didnt have power steering in mine. But I would have liked it.

Back on topic, I had my company car, Jackeroo, do something similar. Turning right, it would stop working. Took it to a power steering joint here on the Goldie, and they rebuilt the box.
