The way I do mine is to use a round steel pipe to direct the cable onto the drum.

One end of the pipe is placed on the ground & the other is held in your hands. Place the pipe on the ground, between you and cable, & as it is spooling in, gentle push the pipe away from you which guides the cable along the drum. When you reach the end of the drum, lift the pipe over the cable, place it on the ground & pull the pipe closer to guide the cable back along the drum.

As for spooling on the drum with no load, I free spooled the entire length of cable out, using gloves I hand feed the 1st 5 wraps around the drum, then hooked the cable onto the towbar of my other car. My wife puts the car in nuetral & gently rides the brakes while I winched the car closer to my 4by.

Hope this helps.

my winch is under the front of my tray and the cable goes back to a permanent fairlead,on the chassis about 1.5m back.the cable always goes through the fairlead in the same position as it's only got a 10mm wide opening.so i need something mounted inbetween the drum and rear fairlead to push/pull the cable across.
