Outer Limits 4x4 Board

While driving along with the clutch in, it sounds like the car is driving on mud tyres (but it obviously isnt).

I am thinking maybe the wheel bearing are rooted, or need repacking with grease ?

Any ideas?

is the noise coming from front or rear,
is the noise only there with the clutch in? or is it there all the time? could also be the Thrust bearing, in the clutch assembly, i had that prob in my MQ years ago

It's hard to pinpoint the noise if its coming from the front or rear.

And not really keen on kingy's suggestion of putting the car up on blocks and running the engine

i guess if i jack up the rear end and put it on stands, and just take it easy, i should be able to figure out if the noise is in the rear or not

and if its not in the rear, its definetly in the front.

its a very good suggestion in my opinion.. car up on blocks.. and use a 25mm PVC pipe approx 30 cm long in your ear to locate the noise if its hard to find.

if ur cruising down a hill and have it in neutral with the clutch out does it continue to make the noise?

If yes it will be the wheel bearings more than likely the front ones.....
Does it get worse at 100kms when u turn the wheel a little bit to left and right, sometimes it gets abit louder?
Could be front Kingpin bearings in that case.

If the clutch out cruising stops the noise, then as Shawn said, could be the clutch bearing in the clutch setup....

the other thing it could be is the diff centres them selves.

Is there any driveline vibration accompanying the noises?

more or less then would elliminate engine / gearbox mounts and shaft movement noises......

also, pinion bearing might be shot, is there any movement in the rear pinion, rear tailshaft unis

one you might have overlooked but highly unlikely, are the front hubs locked, might be front tail shaft,

list is endless really

engine off coasting down the hill, with clutch in and the noise is there still

i am gunna swap another set of tyres onto it, as it sounds like tyre noise, if that fixes it then fucking wonderful

otherwise, it looks like a whole rebuild of the front end

front end bearing job is easy enough to do, just expesive

so the noise is definatly in the front end then?
